recommend definitely, cool bartender, full menu til 2am, just as great service, amazing burger, excellent martini special, absolutely excellent place
Some unexpected surprises.
I had a birthday dinner party here last November and was delighted to see that Ivan Kane himself greeted us and made sure our table was ready on time. Of course all my friends show up whenever they feel like it because it's LA, so we sat at an 8 seat empty table for a little bit.
I brought my own cake and the wait-staff stored it correctly. They cut it beautifully and gave me the full candle treatment. The cutting fee was a little high, but I checked about it ahead of time so there were no surprises.
The only thing we weren't prepared for was the mandatory prix fixe menu which was NOT advertised on the site as being served that evening (Friday). I had to apologize to my guests. We were expecting the large selection menu. But the food was tasty and everybody had a fantastic time. Our waiter was MIA a few times, but he never got anything wrong and was very knowledgeable. After about 9pm when the crowds start pouring in and the show is getting geared up, this place is inconceivably loud. I like it, some people hate it. If you want to have a conversation, reserve a table not on the dance floor or don't go on a show night.
The bill was $500 or so for 7 people. Probably would have been two thirds less on a non prix fixe night.
worse top chef related restaurant.
The food and drinks were amazing, but not worth it, since my party and i were harassed by wanna-be jersey shore friends of their wait staff. my meal ended with me being called " bitch", "rude", and "drunk bitch" by two women who were clearly more drunk then me since the server didn't neglect their table like ours.
if you end up going and your server is JUDE, please leave or ask for another server.
here is what was wrong with service:
1. the server Jude brought us our check a total of three times. at no time did we ask for our check or did it look like we were winding up. we had to have our check reprinted twice since we ordered crepes and then mac and cheese after each time he brought us our check. please note that there were at least 4 other tables (including the white trash that harassed us, that were friends of the server) that were trying to get their money's worth of bottomless. also we were there to celebrate a birthday.
2. its ironic cos when Alex from this episode ran the front of house on Top Chef there was a compliant that he didn't fill water glasses. we waited an hour and half for a water glass to get filled. we put all of our glasses together and told the server. he then only filled one! when we called him back to tell him he got defensive and said "well do you guys want to complain?" he then came back and spilled half of the pitcher on the table and my friend. (later on in his "apology" he told us that the pitcher was too wide and the glasses small) seriously: isn't water glass filling like the first thing you learn in Server 101?!?!?!
3. they kept on "running out" of champagne. like twice. the first time we waited at least an hour. but another sever Fermin was very sweet about it and said that he had to go for more and I appreciated how kind he was to go on the champagne run. later when it ran out again, Jude announced to our table, with a wave of keys, that he was going to go and get more. as if we were requesting him to hike through the sahara for water. newsflash jude: you are a server this is part of your job, i did not ask you for another task! i mean when i worked for victoria secret and a woman wanted something that wasn't on the floor, i didn't complain about going to the back stock room to look for it, i did it cos that was part of my job!!!
but here is the kicker. so the reason why Jude was such a bad server was because he was spending most of his shift socializing with his friends, at the table next to us. so my friend that got the water spilt on him went to get the manager to complain, and when the manager came over, Jude's friends started to scream at us "don't listen to them, they are rude, they are being drunk bitches, they are just being bitches." the management made no attempt to ask them to stop harassing us. let me repeat that one more time just to clarify: MANAGEMENT MADE NO ATTEMPT TO STOP THEIR PATRONS FROM HARASSING MY PARTY.
later when i went inside to talk to management, the "manager" Aaron, told me that he wasn't really a front of the house guy, that he was actually a chef and wasn't used to handle things. obviously.
oh and here is the kicker. they tried to make it up to us by offering us a free dessert. a free dessert to make up for the fact that their friends called us "drunk bitches" yeah not cool.
and lastly, reality TV is just like reality: remember how in restaurant wars, Alex ran front of the house, and the host stand was always empty? well when i first got there, empty. when my friend went to get the manager to complain, empty. when i went back to speak to the manager, empty.
so if you want to dine with trash, you should go to cafe was.
if you want to dine with class, go next door to the hungry cat and get the hamburger!
Cafe what the heck does that say?. Went to ivan kane's for a speed dating event and loved it! The atmosphere was absolutely intoxicating. Event was on the patio with heaters keeping us toasty. We had a blast! Drinks are heavenly if the price a bit on the devil side. Had some great nibbles - their chips and dips awesome - their olives very moreish and am hoping to go back for dinner. If your in the area - you HAVE to stop by. Definitely recommend.
Great Food and Wonderful Atmosphere. This place is absolutely excellent! I have been here nearly 10 times now and have yet to be disappointed. Their burger is amazing. I know gourmet burgers are all the crazy right now and if you are on board, you must try this one! They also have an excellent 2 martini special for only $5 (for both) around lunch time. The daily specials are not to be missed either and the atmosphere is relaxing and fun.
Fantastic New Spot!.
I absolutelely LOVE this new spot! I was recently there at a networking event and was blown away by the decor and vibe.
It's a very old Hollywood, meets New York lounge in the heart of Hollywood, minus the scene of the velvet red carpet.
Editorial Review. The brainchild of Mr. Forty Deuce himself, Ivan Kane, Cafe Wa s serves up twists on American fare like the Bistro Burger (topped with brie, proscuitto, and a fried egg) in a space that is just as twisted.
Restaurant or Nightclub?. My girlfriend and I had a movie to go to but left ourselves over an hour to eat dinner beforehand. We walked past empty tables on the patio and were told that there was a 15 minutes wait. We patiently waited 20 minutes before being seated on the empty patio. When I asked about why we had to wait I was told that there were reservations ahead of our party. Interestingly none of these reservations seemed to show up. Then after they shut our heat lamp off I knew we'd run out of time before the movie and had little interest in giving these people my money. I get the idea of making people wait so there's a line at the nightclub, but at a 'cafe' is just silly. Never again.
Great atmosphere & customer service!. My friend and I ate next door at Kabuki one night and when we were walking back to the car, we thought Cafe W as looked cute so we asked to see a menu. Two very friendly ladies greeted us and invited us in to see the place since they just opened, and gave us a little tour and invited us to sit down for a cocktail. I was pleastly surprised and found this very nice. We didnt end up staying because we just had dinner but a week or so later we decided to have a "girls night out" for drinks and came back! The service was just as great. The bartender was cool not to mention kinda cute ;) Kinda spendy (martinis are $13) but it what places aren't? The atmosphere when you walk is pleasantly dark and romantic with a vintage 1920's feel. Its very large and is great for a date, girls night out like what we did, or with a group of people. I loved it and we're planning on coming back more often!
with a friend at her bachlorette party. we decided this place at 1am. we wanted to go to a place that was more upscale than ihop or tommys or in-n-out! this was a fun and funky place. we ordered steak tare tare/ asparagus salad/ frisee salad and french onion soup i think a cosmo and 1 evian. it was kinda pricey but everyone was happy with their selection nevertheless.
partons there are pretty good looking and so are the staff. they are very friendly and even have a patio!
last nite another friend and i went there for drinks after a FUNCTION and he thought it was really nice too.
i love that they have a full menu til 2am...they have live piano music and the owner and chef walk around greeting people
