Great Yoga! Great experiences!

Wonderful Teachers: Travis and Astrid

The experience at this yoga studio is different with each teacher. Classes incorporate challenging asanas and yoga philosophy. Some classes are very spiritual, while some classes play popular music. I would take yoga here even if it wasn't donation only - especially for Travis and Astrid who are very gracious and welcoming. Travis is a very spiritual, very uplifting teacher - be ready to work up a sweat in a sweet way. Astrid is one of their veteran teachers, and often recites poetry or the words of yogi masters during lessons.

Classes here can be as physically challenging as you want them to, no one makes you do anything you feel uncomfortable with, in fact, the teachers ask you to rest as much as you like. I would also recommend Ally for yoginis with children or long time students. I have been going to this studio since it opened in '04.

  • Pros: A great balance of challenging asanas and yoga philosophy
  • Cons: None

Great class but disrespectful students

by woof18 at Citysearch

The new power yoga studio West is great and has a wonderful store next to it (although a bit noisy with loud buzzing in the background - a good challenge to help you maintain focus). If you are looking for a great class where you don't need instructions and you just want a good workout then this is great. However, if you are new to yoga or you just started your practice, I highly recommend you study in a studio where you will get some hands-on assistance to ensure your form is proper. My biggest complaint about this studio though is that people showed up over 30 minutes late and expected others already in the midst of their practice to accommodate them. Please - if you are more than a few minutes late, find another class to attend. We all have busy schedules but coming in to a very crowded class is extremely disruptive to others.

  • Pros: Nice studio, instructor good
  • Cons: Very crowded and students coming in way too late

The Details on Santa Monica Power Yoga West

Save Money:

Santa Monica Power Yoga operates on "the power of giving." That means classes are donation only and guests are encouraged to give what they can afford. $12 is the recommended amount per session, however.

Know Before You Go:

Yoga mats are available to rent for $2, but it's highly recommended that regular yogis purchase their own mats. Since things get pretty sweaty, this is a more sanitary and healthy decision.

Look Good:

Bring a towel and make sure to wear loose fitting pants or shorts. Avoid baggy shirts or tops because they are likely to interfere and hinder your poses.

The Extras:

This is the second of two Santa Monica Power Yoga studios. The first is located upstairs at 522 Santa Monica Boulevard, between 5th & 6th.
