What Our Expert Scouts Say

The Association
March 19, 2013

Cool place to hang out on the weekdays, weekends get too crazy. It's dark and they play good music on Thursdays so you can bring your date or someone you don't want to be seen with and enjoy all aspects of this place.

The Association is a speakeasy-like bar in a rather non-discreet location in DTLA. It's more of a place to bring a date or a group of intimate friends. Sometimes they'll have a live jazz band but it's all about the atmosphere here: dark and sultry. Speciality drinks are aplenty.

Will be coming back. Went there with a party of 10 and it was the first time we all agreed that it was a great bar. The Doorman was cordial, the Bartenders creative and talented and the Cocktail Waitresses sweet and attentive. The decor was perfect, dark with a hint of low lighting (giving it that candle light look), leather booth like couches that are very comfortable and the bar elegantly displaying all liquor offered.

I'm going back!

A good place to hide. Dark, comfortable and very very good drinks. Careful, it could turn you into an alcoholic.

Where the "scene" comes in a glass. The Association isn't a bar for those people - the ones who can't leave their residence without an entourage and/or can't seem to adequately cover their assets. The dark corners, muddy-colored leather couches and no-nonsense bartending ensure that this classy downtown watering hole keeps its clientele just as classy. Don't come here expecting to order a Diet Red Bull and vodka. The thoughtful drinks menu with stand-out selections like the French 75 and Pisco Sour, is there for a reason. Use it wisely, then sit back and relax with the chill Downtown crowd.

Cocktails for the discerning palate. I'm not a cocktailian, but I do like a good selection of beers whichThe Association has in spades.

It is a bit pricey, but it's one of those bars where you're like "Woah, hey! Look at me! I'm fancy! I knew about this place! Check me out." And you can walk by the door with your friends and point it out, and seem like you know a lot about this "downtown renaissance". And despite the plentiful reviews you can still mention it and be greeted with curiosity instead of the "been there, done that" look that so many other bars elicit.

It's a picture perfect place to toss back a drink or two, without feeling over dressed in your fashionista workday gear. So I likes.

Comfy Lounge. Nice lounge that transports you back to old school Vegas...pre-Wynn. A very dark and cool vibe. I grabbed a glass of red wine and sunk into one of their VERY long leather couches that line one wall. The only problem was that after a couple of mood-enhancing songs (some Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc.) they started playing some hip-hop. Not appropriate, and I was too lazy to get up to complain. Luckily it switched back to the oldies. Despite the somewhat strange music selection, it was a good place to chat and unwind.

Anglophiles congregate at this underground lounge hidden beneath the residential Pacific Electric loft building in Downtown Los Angeles.. In Short
Searching for a shadowy, "member's only" vibe without all the hassle of secret passwords, velvet ropes and arrogant attitude? Look no further than right beneath your feet. In the basement of downtown's residential Pacific Electric Lofts hides this clandestine English pub-lounge. Yes, its subterranean position, Vegas casino-inspired floral carpeting, low recessed lighting and occasional DJ set imbue the space with all the ambiance of a downtempo lounge; but, the bar's spirit is more akin to a British neighborhood watering hole. Scotch, whiskey and classic cocktails, like the L.A.-founded "Brown Derby," are the staples du jour, while--flagrant carpeting aside--stately brown leather and brass banquettes keep the decor modest and simple. Consider it a charming place of mysterious contradictions: Nobody expects an exclusive-sounding bar with little signage out front to be so welcoming and familiar.
