Featuring the prodigious pairing of Chef Katsuya Uechi and world-renowned designer Philippe Starck, SBE's first Katsuya restaurant debuted in 2006 in Brentwood.

Katsuya stimulates the senses in every possible way, creating a dining experience like no other. Chef Uechi's menu boasts a plethora of inventive sushi and Robata grilled dishes that are true works of art. Equally extraordinary is its extensive list of premier sakes and specialty cocktails, created expressly for Katsuya with exotic names such as Burning Mandarin (voted "Best in LA" by Los Angeles Magazine) and the Kiwi Envy. Designed to reflect a Japanese "Bento Box" that echoes the simplicity and essence of Japanese cuisine, the all-wood interior features bold illuminated photographs and design touches at every turn.

In Short
If you think it's all about the tanned and toned blondes in slinky dresses out front of the glass wall entrance--they're either standing around waiting for valet or seated at one of the small tables indulging in edamame (calories, ladies!)--then you've got another thing coming. Kind of. Yes, the crowd here can be pretty, but as designer extraordinaire Philippe Starck is apt to do, the decor itself is the real eye catcher. The blonde-wood interior (are you sensing a theme here?) sets the scene for the plethora of white couches and chairs, and the oversized photographs that look like mild versions of Geisha erotica. Whether at the sushi bar, robata bar, outdoor terrace or lounge, Chef Uechi crafts beautifully-presented American-style Japanese favorites like crispy rice with spicy tuna, halibut with yuzu pepper, grilled dishes and tempura. As if it could be any other way.

never any attitude from the staff. prices are a little on the high end, but it is an upscale place so this is expected. the dishes are some of the best around, but most of them are non-traditional, so if you're looking for traditional sushi, then this may not be the best place for you.

When you sit down you are asked if you want "edaname or peppers" and I said edaname. Got the bill and they charged us $6 for the edaname! I figured it was given to us when asked the way the waiters do. When we ordered bottled water for our table they brought out 2 Vossis and we had to send one back. Mind you we didn't ask for 2. I kid you not that there was a children's birthday party with 7 or 8 year olds next to us that were loud and all over the place. There were 7 of the kids and the mom was taking 1000s of pictures the whole time. I would say it is more a family restaurant than a hot spot. Given it's in Brentwood and that's more a family atmosphere I'm not surprised but for the $$$$ food you may want to pick your sushi up elsewhere to avoid children's parties. I noticed only 5 tables of two in the whole restaurant! That tells you that it's more a family type place with a Hollywood decor in my opinion. The food was good but they do RUSH YOU! They don't believe in enjoying each item. We got our baked crab rolls, creamy shrimp and tempura at the same time! It was cold by the time we finished them. I had to ask the waiter to hold off on our entrees so we could catch up! Hope this helps you!
