not better burger, not cool spot, good size, nice beer, great place

Their burgers are out of this world and their jalapeno cole slaw is a great compliment.

Such a great burger! Juicy, meaty, LOVED the fries, crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. Sweet brioche bun. Delish!

Love the burger! Get it with a side of their jalapeno slaw. If you get the fries try the curry ketchup. They have been and wine as well. End the meal with a scoop of Scoop's ice cream.
Great Burger. I have eaten here twice and the burger here is one of the best I've eaten. I had the side of sweet potato wedges and another time the Persian cucumber salad. I was served in a timely manner and the server was friendly. The bun tastes fresh from a bakery, the Harris Ranch beef seasoned perfectly, great cheese, applesmoked bacon, and argula make for a very tasty burger. I declined the garlic aioli. There's nothing wrong with it, just a personal preference.
Wonderful Burger.
This is a great place for a simple burger. Restaurants often run into problems trying to add too many options with size, additions and what not. The Golden State has decided to do a few things, but do them very well.
There is only one of each sandwich: burger, veggie burger, tuna, BLT, muffuletta, chicken and veggie.
There are other sausages and salads to be sampled, but really this is their wheel house. The burgers are a good size and go nicely with the aged cheddar cheese and smoked bacon. The tastes are subtle and blend nicely without one dominating the others.
The bread paired perfectly. It didn't break down and fall apart. It fought back to provide slight resistance and it absorbed the juices from my medium rare burger nicely to impart more flavor.
I suggest that you give this Mid City locale a shot and you will be impressed. I do however suggest that you bring a jacket as the AC really is working overtime. I was actually taken aback with the briskness of the place when I got there and had to find a spot that didn't cool my burger off too quickly.
The one real drawback of this restaurant was the length of time it took for me to get my food. Perhaps this is the trade off with getting such an expertly made burger. I did notice that I was not the only one that had to wait 15 to 20 minutes for my meal but I did appreciate it all the more once I got it.
BAD!. For a place with such a nice beer selection, you'd think they would know how to pour a beer. Burger was good, but not better than Fathers Office, Westside Tavern, or Apple Pan.
California (foodie) dreaming at The Golden State.. Like a really great art exhibit, the result of Jason Bernstein's and James Starr's good taste is a carefully plucked collection of all the best "gets" around--a well-curated assembly of food and drink. Beer courtesy of Pasadena's own Craftsman Brewery, wine from Topanga Vineyards, ice cream from Scoops, sausage from Huntington Meats, Harris Ranch beef for the much-praised burgers and hot dogs from Let's Be Frank are all part of this stellar collection of local treats. The laidback friendliness of the owners and staff is also a welcome reprieve from the puffed-up 'tude running rampant on much of this cool-kid stretch of Fairfax. Chow down on the chicken and apple sausage (delectable) and fried sweet potato wedges (seriously tasty) inside their sunny eatery/passion project. Fun fact: Popular L.A. chef Samir Mohajer helped set the menu.
Editorial Review. The space formerly known as Nova Express has become a hideaway for sandwiches, brews and ice cream. 'Nuff said.
