great japanese sushi, favorite sushi place, great service, great food, extremely fresh fish, favorite japanese restaurants, not disappoint hamakawa
Delicious no frills sushi. Hamakawa is probably the best value for sashimi in the city. It may not have the uber-trendy atmosphere of many L.A. sushi restaurants, but the sashimi is delicious, cheap and comes in large portions. Overall good food, good service.
One of the best in LA!!!!!!!!. I've been coming to this place for years, and Hamakawa never disappoints! The fish is as fresh as it gets, slices of fish are BIG, quality is tops, and service is great. I'd definitely recommend the soft shell crab roll (aka spider roll), which is a meal in itself. Also, try one of the many grades of toro they have. Location can be a little shady at times, however it's worth it! Plus, they're open late!
YUMMY. The sushi was soooooo good and fresh. I'm sure they have different rolls, but I couldn't figure it out. I love how they are open late- it's one of my favorite places.
One of the city's crown jewels of sushi presents perfectly sliced delicacies well into the wee hours..
The Scene
Japanese regulars and local sushi-philes wept when Hamakawa closed his Little Tokyo doors, then wept again for joy when he reopened in 2001. Forget the hype of Beverly Hills and the Valley, this small, warm and unpretentious spot just might be sushi Zen's ground zero. And it's open until late--on weekdays.
The Food
Don't be fooled by the plain menu and Kirin-Ichiban sushi-photo place mats, sushi master Hamakawa has a deft hand. His fish can get no fresher, cut into huge, perfect slices, with particularly outstanding ikura (salmon roe) and uni (sea urchin) sushi. Combos are a good bargain, but so are the exquisite cooked a la carte dishes. Delicate monkfish liver completely transcends fois gras; black cod, redolent of miso and sake, is meltingly satisfying; small clams bathe in a fragrant tidal pool of broth. A bowl of fresh green tea noodles hits the late-night comfort spot like no other.
Expectation set too high?. After reading the high praises and compliments for Hamakawa, I was expecting great sushi. To the very least, I thought it would be comparable to Sushi Gen's (just across the street) sushi. As it turned out, my experience was not bad, but just nothing special. Other than sushi, Hamakawa does offer many other neat food items, like soba, yakitori, etc.. The one great thing about Hamakawa is the late late hours it opens into the night. Any sushi would be great at 1 AM, I suppose.
very fresh sushi.
Sushi and Sashimi are very fresh, and the price is resonable compare to all those expensive japanese restaurant.
If you like eel, try caterpillar roll!!
It just tastes heavenly good!!
Great!. I've eaten at Sushi Roku and Matsuhisu before but I still keep coming back to Hamakawa. This place is for great sushi and has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in LA.
great place for some good sushi. i personally love this place, albeit its not the most romantic place to go for a date, but it has great food. the chefs are very nice and you can have a nice chat with them.. it has lots of space, but small tables only, at least thats what i have seen.. i am a very big spender on sushi, i can easly rack about $150 for 2 on sushi, so to get a place like this that has great sushi and is at a much lower price bracket its great.. i say though much lower being relative to each person.. i dont mind spending $80 for 2 but you might.. but when you see the large portions of salmon they serve and have a great unagi.. slightly burnt on the edges.. really good.. hmmm.... i have been here many times and have gotten to know the chefs..
Wow....
Absolutely phenomenal sushi, served by friendly chefs will keep you coming back for more...and more...and more.
For sure this is the freshest sushi I have had in California ever, and will definitely be going back.
I didn't anticipate ordering so much, but it was so good I coundl't stop.
Great service. Great sushi. Enough said.
Hamakawa will not disappoint!. If you are looking for a trendy-people watching restaurant, then go somewhere else. However, if you are looking for quality sushi and very friendly service, then Hamakawa will not disappoint you. We went there for lunch and were treated to some great tasting sushi, attentive service, and reasonable prices. A definite winner among sushi places!
