Editorial Review for Millie's – by Steven Grimm
The Scene
Millie's is like a 1950s housewife who deserted her family, started chain-smoking and joined a hard-core band. Yet to her kids, she's still a sweetie. Belly up to the counter to watch cooks at the old stove or sit in the side room hung with aprons embroidered with nasty slogans.
The Food
The menu features eggs and pancakes with personality. The Devil's Mess scramble is loaded with Cajun-spiced turkey sausage and white-cheddar cheese. The Marsala-sweetened Hangtown Fry boasts a truckload of bacon and oysters. On the lunch side, sandwiches are also zippier, like the grilled cheese sandwich crackling with chipotle heat. The heavy hamburger is served on a spongy bun--perfect for getting a handle on the quality toppings.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThis spot is for leisurely meals. Unless you're dining at 8am on a Monday, don't expect things to happen fast.
ParkingStreet parking is difficult, particularly during peak brunch hours (10am to 12:30pm) on weekends. Some people risk parking in the 99-Cent Store lot.
The ExtrasBurn off the homemade biscuit calories by strolling down the street to the treasure trove of Den of Antiquity.

omigod i'm full. Happy mess, devil's mess, rosemary potatoes, coffee, bacon. And waffles, too. This is breakfast, and really done right. Our server was very nice, although a little overwhelmed, but it didn't seem to affect things too much. Food is delicious, and ample. You actually get what you pay for. Millie's has a neighborhood feel, and you find yourself in conversations with those around you as you pass the tapatio and syrup back and forth; this is a good thing, unless you're the hollywood type that avoids talking to lesser beings. Perfect on any sunday, or any day you want to feel like sunday.
Pros: amount of food, casual, friendly, endless coffe, delicious delicious.
Cons: might have to wait for a table. do it.

Millie's is a fantastic choice for breakfast or lunch in Silver Lake. Try the Eleanor R. special for breakfast -- the rosemary potatoes with eggs, cheese, guacamole, salsa and sour cream will get you coming back for more. Another highlight are the banana walnut pancakes -- yummy! I've also had the BLT for lunch, which was fantastic. On top of the food, it's a great spot to enjoy the sunshine at one of the sidewalk tables. Also great for Silver Lake people watching. One tip -- like all breakfast spots in Silver Lake (and probably everywhere else on the planet) get there early or late unless you want to wait for a table.
