What Our Expert Scouts Say

One of the best Mexican restaurants in LA. Mole that just won't quite and house-made sopas. Always add the Oaxacan string cheese!

Easily one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city, and certainly tops among Oaxacan spots. The moles are fantastic, as is the mezcal program.

Authentic Oaxacan food. A variety of delicious moles on the menu; if you're feeling adventurous be sure to order the grasshoppers.

The real thing. Don't go expecting more than just a great meal. If you do, you're guaranteed to be impressed. But be warned -- no alcohol is served though you are welcomed to bring your own. And if your Spanish speaking skills aren't polished -- requests beyond basic ordering may be a problem. But if you know this and come prepared, be ready to enjoy some of the best, true Oaxacan dishes in LA.

Que Buena!. What a nice place! A sunny room, friendly staff, and a menu that clearly describes the various foods that are specialties of Oaxaca.

On this first visit, I tried the tamale which comes wrapped in a banana leaf. It's filled with chicken with a dark mole and mushrooms and is very good. It could be spicier for my taste, but the flavor was definitely there. To drink I had the horchata. If you've only had horchata (a drink made from rice), from chain mexican restaurants you're in for a treat. This horchata is topped with nuts, chopped fruit and a flowery cactus juice that infuses the drink with the exotic flavor of distant lands.

They even have a kids menu.

REAL Mexican Food. Forget Taco Bell, El Cholo and all those other places that serve Tex Mex. Guelaguetza serves real Mexican food; Moles, Pasole, Tamales, etc. Be sure to get the Horchata, they top the regular rice milk with cactus fruit, crushed nuts, and sweet juice. Delicious!
