Yummy food, but get up off the wine!. The food is very good and the specials menu is extensive. The ambience is plain and simple but cozy. Overall, a quite satisfying and reasonably priced meal. However, the wine glasses are run-of-the-mill, old-school-Chinese-restaurant tiny. Please folks, charge a dollar or two more for the wine but serve it in a decent-sized glass, for chrissakes!

Sushi, sake and an atmospheric patio make this Hillhurst eatery a go-to casual date spot for Eastsiders.. In Short
Sure, there are plenty of places to sit inside, but the patio is why most people eat sushi at San Sui. Outside, vibrant orange lanterns cast a warm glow above black benches with seat cushions that are tucked away in a cozy, greenery-lined nook blocked off from busy Hillhurst. Weekday lunches consist of sushi, sashimi, teriyaki and tempura combos, but most people come for dinner, when the lanterns kick up the atmosphere a notch. Beyond the standard selection of sushi and rolls (including ample veggie options), you can also get udon or soba soups, grilled meat and fish entrees and combo dinner specials. In addition to nightly specials listed on the whiteboard, specialty items include chicken yakitori, teppanyaki shrimp and beef kushiyaki.

san sui melts in your mouth. try the lotus root! whenever i go and i've been there 4 times since last sunday im treated like im their favorite customer, maybe its because i've introduced myself to Masako their veteran waitress...either way

the food is divine, sushi that melts in your mouth, and usually we stay til it closes having sake round after sake round while joking with Masako. BEST service and best sushi on the East Side.

So-so Service, Bad Food. I can't believe that I actually waited 40 minutes outside for it to open.

During nighttime the restaurant does seem to have a good atmosphere to dine in. However, looks can be deceiving.

My girlfriend and I got a table at the corner right next to 2 very large windows. We were joined later by 3 very large flies just flying around us trying to attack our food. This made me wonder how the restaurant ever got an "A" for cleanliness rating. There were 2 waitresses there. One of them seemed nice while the other one never smiled (guess which one served us).

Now to the good part, the food.

I ordered their San Sui Dinner Set, an order of Salmon Sushi and an order of Toro Sushi.

The dinner set was nothing special but definitely not worth the $25 they are charging.

What I dislike more is their sushi. There were way too much rice. And I highly suspect that they charged me $12 for fatty tuna (toro) when they actually brought me plain tuna. The 2 pieces of toro sushi that I got had no fat at all.

What's even worse was the ramen that my girlfriend ordered. We both believe that it was simply instant noodles with extra vegetables. I apologize if they did not use instant noodles to cook their ramen, but even if they didn't, they might as well should have cause it sure won't taste any different.

My overall experience there was really bad. The service can be improved and the food that you get are just ridiculous. Normally a restaurant with quality like this won't annoy me enough to write a review online. But the combination of their food and their price is what really made this restaurant outrageous.

bad experience. the sushi was ok, nothing special. the grilled calamari was undercooked and had to send it back. then they charged us for things we didn't order. we noticed they did the same thing to the people sitting next to us.

outstanding, artful dishes, macrobiotic. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in L.A. The food is presented immaculately, with a macrobiotic influenced menu (kinpira, marinated lotus, burdock root, etc). The "energy salad" is absolutely healing. Be sure to try the daily specials. They've really thought out each dish, everything is presented artfully - this is what makes San Sui ("mountain river") outstanding. The service was so fast it seemed like they read our mind before we even ordered. The ambiance is nature meets modern Japanese. And for all this, the prices are not high. A warm and healing restaurant with spot-on flavor and excellent service. Sit inside or out, you feel like you are in nature.

Not going back. Went there once thought it was good, went again and got two blobs of 'sushi' for $17. Service was slow as molasses.

I love San Sui, and you will, too.. Delicious sushi, lovely atmosphere with dangling orange lanterns, and the sweetest hostess this side of the Mississipp. They don't make proprietors like this anymore...she makes you feel like a guest in her own home, and the sushi is so scrumptious I never fail to stuff myself silly.

This place is awful. The food was NOT fresh and the waiter was rude when told. I just read the rating above. Sounds like we had the same rude waiter
