Editorial Review for Il Capriccio on Vermont – by Amanda Hawk
The Scene
Burnished orange walls and soft lighting create a cozy Tuscan feel, while attentive service and a long open kitchen add to the familial air. A loyal weekend crowd ups the volume level; for a quieter dining experience, visit during the week when the feel is more laid-back.
The Food
This is the place for authentic fare; no fussy "Cal-Italian" tampering gets in the way here. Start with eggplant and roasted pepper terrine, refreshing and flavorful, or calamari Livorno, sauteed in zesty tomato sauce. Pasta selections are faithfully prepared; penne arrabiatta arrives perfectly al dente and with plenty of kick. Meat and fish offerings are also strong. Particularly notable is the special roast pork, tender and extremely flavorful. Desserts are hit-or-miss. A well-prepared creme brulee hits the spot, but tiramisu should be avoided at all costs. House wines are available, but feel free to bring your own--the staff will accommodate.

La Buca on Melrose was full so i had to pick a new italian restaurant for the evening, so i figured i would try this place. I called ahead and asked how long the wait was and he said half an hour. I showed up and the host was very cold and not glad to have customers there. He said " I can put your name on the list, but you better be here or your table is being given away" I thought to myself...where am i going to go? He was just RUDE!!! So i went across the street to The Vermont and had one of the best meals of my life!!! The food here may or may not be good, but as far as im concerned it doesnt matter!!! They have a corkage fee too, something ridiculous like 10$! Dont waste your time!!!
Pros: You can quickly run to The Vermont across the street!!!
Cons: The Rude old guy that seats people

I l-o-v-e LOVE Il Capriccio! My fiance and I have eaten there almost once a month since our first date at Il Cap nearly two years ago. Super friendly and attentive staff and managers... and we love Mama Flora! Choose anything off the menu and you won't be disappointed. The red pepper-mozzarella terrine appetizer is super yummy and big enough for two (as are the entrees). Their specials are always awesome, and I would recommend ordering the pork tenderloin if it's on the board the night you visit. For dessert, skip the tiramisu and head straight to the cannoli or the ricotta cheesecake.... take it To Go if you're already over-stuffed from the generous portions of everything else. With a nice cup of coffee, the cannoli makes a pretty tasty breakfast the next day.
Pros: big portions, friendly staff
Cons: parking lot is valet only, and street parking is a pain in the butt
