What Our Expert Scouts Say

Jitlada Restaurant

This is the best place for Southern Thai food. I've tried most of their dishes here, and they are all simply delicious. On their version of the hainan chicken, it is named, cow-man-kai.

With so many other Thai options along this stretch of Sunset Blvd Jitlada really is the best. They have an extensive menu of spicy spicy Southern Thai dishes in addition to their regular menu. Crying tiger beef is phenomenal. The mango sticky rice is the perfect way to end the meal.

Located in a tiny Sunset Boulevard strip mall, Jitlada does Thai food right. I could taste the freshness of veggies in everything...the carrots were still crisp and not soggy. The panang curry is top-notch and not overwhelmingly spicy.

Tips for Jitlada Restaurant

WORST restaurant customer service experience EVER. Went with a group of 5. We were seated after a few minutes and our order was taken pretty promptly, but it took over 2 hours for all of our dishes to come out of the kitchen! Not only that, but each dish was brought out separately so by the time the last dish came out, the first person had been done for over an hour! No one apologized...ever. There was never a "sorry for your wait" or a reason for the horrible service. We had to remind the waiter that we were still waiting on 3 dishes and then miraculously, they showed up within 15 minutes, and that was after waiting 1.5 hours. We asked for an adjustment with our bill (which of course was delivered in a timely manner) and they came back....with a 10% discount!! seriously?? the food was not that good to be that horrible in service and still, never an apology. To top it off, the owner of the restaurant (I think she's the owner) was chatting up EVERY other table and never came over to us AND she disappeared for about 45 minutes and she had been outside the whole time PAINTING HER NAILS. unreal. don't waste your time here. total let down.

Absolutely Horrible dining experience. Horrible Restaurant and even worse service

We went to this place with the best of intentions, hoping to have a really good Thai meal, we read all the reviews. our meal was anything but. First of all the ambiance and decor was horrible and disgusting, in a run down strip mall across the street from the 99 cent store. Actually describing this as a strip mall would be an upgrade. Despite those conditions of the restaurant and its less than appealing surroundings we focussed on the food, hoping that would make up for the ambience and completely uninterested service. We asked for a crab dish that wasn't deep fried, or in a sweet sauce. What do we get, a deep fried crab dish in a sweet sauce. We get them to begrundingly substitute for a jungle curry which was so ridiculously spicy that we could not even eat more than two bites. Our other dishes were a pad thai, and a red curry, once again nothing that would distinguish these dishes from the 1000s of other Thai restaurants serving poor to mediocre food. I would recommend that you save the trip to this hole in the wall and try Saladang which is better in all aspects. The service and quality of food do not justify these type of ratings. To be honest, I don't know how anyone can rate this place as the best Thai, it is not even close. Maybe we hit the place on a bad day, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was an absolutely horrible dining experience. Furthermore, the service left much to be desired, they were not at all interested in listening to what the customer was looking for in recommending dishes.

Don't waste your money, cold food and terrible service!!!. Last evening we ate at one of the worst and most expensive Thai restaurants. If you want to spend half your night waiting for your meal, go there. We arrived at 6:30, waited approx. 1-1/2 hours for food which arrived in separate courses. First came our friend's main dish before his soup, my chicken satay came cold and was a very small and not very tasty portion. About 20 min later came my rice and then another 20 min later came our main dishes. One we could not tell if it was pork or beef and was so over cooked and not edible we sent it back for something else. The food was fair at best. We have eaten better food and larger portions at less trendy places without waiting and with a much fatter wallet in our pocket when leaving. The waitress never came back to ask us if we ever wanted another drink or even a glass of water. We wound up leaving Jitlada close to 8:30 in the evening - 2 hours after arrival. As far as I am concerned you can keep your overpriced and trendy restaurants and give me one with one good food and service speaking from someone who travels worldwide and has eaten with an open mind in many different locations. We have spent time in Thailand and have received better service at small local places - with better food -foreshame on this restaurant.

Jitlada - example of BAD service!. I just spent ONE HOUR waiting to get take out food from JITLADA! I was told 20 minutes and took an hour, and that too at 5 PM! After a soft complaint, the owners were TOTALLY unaplogetic and rude! Consider yourself forewarned if you decide to go there. Food is good though.

The greatest Thai restaurant EVER!. Thai food is without a doubt my favorite and I have had every thai dish that most places make. Rarely is there a place that has a menu filled with things I have never hear of. But this is one of those places. I went ahead and let the owner pick 5 dishes for out table and they were all new to me, and all of them were STELLAR!!!! Hands down without a doubt my new favorite thai place. I am going again this weekend and I can't wait! We did have to wait 20 minutes for a table and had to park in a neighboring parking lot because Jitladas lot was full. But that is what happens when you visit a great restaurant.

Spicy like you would not believe. So I ordered a Level 4 which you think would be just fine in normal thai restaurants but Jitlada's 4 = a 10 at another restaurant!

If you like to sweat and be spice challenged this is your place!

Portion was a little small and it was a little pricey for a hole-in-the-wall place but its worth a challenge once. Don't expect ambiance, so its a place to hang with friends not a date.

Don't order the DYNAMITE spicy! I heard it was like being on fire literally!

BEST...BEST...BEST... TAI FOOD IN LA!!!. This place is the best tai food in town. All the dishes are amazing and I've tried many of them, I am a regular and Jazz, the owner, treats you like family. I highly recommend for a variety of reasons. It is not for the light hearted when it comes to spice, so make sure your highly hydrated. This is family owned and they all work very hard. The owners stay until 2 am preparing the curries for the next day. This is the kind of place I look for when traveling, hard to find, great menu (like great home cooking) that makes you feel like family. I just want some of her secret recipes.

Great food -- But, uh oh, the service is getting bad. We went to Jitlada on Friday, February 20, 2009. The service was very bad. In that way that LA restaurants become well known and the service starts acting like you're intruding on them. Not good. Orders were getting confused. Arrogant main waitress, etc.

Best Thai Food in Los Angeles (Maybe even Thailand!). Wow. What a friendly fantastic restaurant! Definitely the most authentic Thai food in all of Los Angeles. Stick to the specialties - you will find a translated menu of the specialty Southern dishes on the last page. The southern curry is incredible - truly the right kind of heat, very hot, very flavorful - it's the real deal. We also tried the deep fried fish with sweet chili sauce, a perfect pairing! Reminded us of our trip to Phuket and all the fantastic seafood we enjoyed there. So tuck in with an ice cold Chang beer and enjoy!

Friendliest place in town-- the most authentic Thai you will find. Proprietor Jazz is one of the sweetest people I've met! Be sure to ask for her. I was there last night to find some crazy authentic southern Thai food-- I found it. The mango, shrimp and cashew salad was excellent. If you seek spicy food, this is the place to go. If you seek authentic ethnic food, this is the place to go. Don't be put off by the strip mall location.
