In Short
Scenesters knew Melrose was going downhill when Billy Shire moved his novelty shop Wacko and its adjoining gallery La Luz de Jesus back to the hipper Eastside. Even though the Los Feliz address should be clear indication, this ain't no snooty Westside gallery. You'll have to wade through Wacko's dense aisles of amazing toys and eccentric geegaws to get to the art trove. Monthly openings draw capacity crowds of lowbrow art aficionados.

The staff is just as eclectic as the merchandise. Billy Shire oversees the gallery, and staffers will happily help you with everything from the pricey, mixed-media tableaux of Madonna and Child and flirty vintage Chinese posters to va-va-voom girlie cake-toppers and Coop's naughty devil girl stickers. Once a month or so, adjoining gallery La Luz de Jesus throws a gala opening that's one hot party. Arrive early because there is no parking lot. You have to find parking on the street filled with meters.

This junky little store is both a book store, trinket store, and has an art gallery in the back. Owned and operated by Billy Shire, Billy has emerged some wonderful art exhibits from this gallery. Many well known artists began at this gallery because Billy gave them a chance. If you're lucky enough to make it to one of La Luz's gallery openings you'll find quite a crowd. The store is not big enough to handle huge crowds so many times you'll find huge lines wrapped around the outside of the store just waiting to get in. Definitely a place to visit when in Los Angeles.

the gallery that's attached to Wacko (a cool store) is full of art from the local scene. Very cool shows happen almost every weekend (just check the papers or call to see what's going on) I think a great way to spend the day getting to know the art scene in los angeles.
