Editorial Review for Hollywood YMCA – by Jordana Brown
The Scene
Despite its heart-of-Hollywood location, this gym's pretension factor is practically nil. Although you won't see made-up starlets on treadmills reading scripts, you might spot Denzel Washington or Tobey Maguire sweating it out on the indoor basketball courts. Staffers are friendly and encouraging, regardless of size, shape or lack of designer workout wear.
The Details
This ain't your father's YMCA; especially since its 1995 renovation. Full-service facilities and up-to-date equipment includes treadmills, elliptical trainers and stair climbers bearing state-of-the-art labels like Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. Gym-goers can also choose from a variety of classes, including boot camp, kickboxing, Spinning and several types of yoga. Other amenities include a lap pool, waist-high training pool, hot tub, two basketball courts, boxing area, racketball courts, quiet room for stretching, and a separate Spinning room. Locker rooms are fully equipped with showers and saunas, and a trained massage therapist awaits your knotted muscles.

Insider Tips
ParkingThere are two YMCA lots--enter one on Cassil, the other on Selma--that charge $1 for three hours with validation (look for the stamps on the table just inside the entrance or at the front desk). Otherwise, meters abound.
Save MoneyThe YMCA philosophy holds that no one should be denied a workout due to a lack of funds. You can receive discounted rates if you can prove eligibility (they will ask for tax returns).
Know Before You GoClass schedules and other special offerings are available from a rack on a wall near the entrance.
The ExtrasFill out a complaint card and turn it in. Then find the response posted on the second floor board.

Tried this one out tonite, since I was in the area. Surprisingly empty by 9:00PM, even tho it's open 'till 11PM. Have to agree that it smells funny - the mens' showers positively stank. The tile floors were grubby, and there's no spray out in the common areas to wipe down the grubby (though otherwise modern) equipment. They actually have a great inventory of pretty modern equipment, so it's kind of sad to see they aren't maintaining the place as well as they should. Add a couple of cleaning people to the staff and address the stench and this would be a first rate facility. They even provide ample towels for free, something that's either a hassle or not available at other Y's I've tried.
Pros: Good equipment, not busy late at night, open late for a Y
Cons: Smells funny, not clean

Not to scare anyone but the people who work at this place can't be trusted. I am no longer a member but I was in the past. After using a credit card I hadn't used in over a year to pay for my membership at the YMCA, suddenly my card started getting all sorts of charges on it. According to my credit card company someone got my card number and had a card made with their own information on it. I NEVER use that card and I hadn't even removed it from my wallet in years with the one exception of using it to pay for my gym membership, seems like a big coincidence to me. I purposely used the card thinking maybe something like this would happen and I was thankful I did because my credit card company didn't hold me accountable. When I called the YMCA to let them know what happened they said there was no proof that the card number was stolen there. Be careful and always check your bank statements.
Pros: decent gym
Cons: crowded, not the cleanest place, rude staff
