great crowd, beautiful bar, always great music, warm vibe, great hot spot, great particular mold, dirty rotating dj
Best Kick back Bar in Hollywood. As a former bartender of Hollywood n Highland, I have always considered The Room the best bar there is. And now that they have finished renovations, I'll surely be taking all my friends there. It's a place that the tourists don't know about, the trendy snobs won't hang out at, and the bartenders know their stuff. It's a dimly lit, no cover, place for any occasion. The music is always great for Hip Hop and the DJ's actually know how to mix, unlke some other phony places that overcharge. Right at Hollywood n Cahuenga, you can bar hop within feet of another bar, and never have to pay a cover. I'm glad the Room is still standing, it'll always be the Heart of Hollywood.
Long before Cahuenga became a "corridor," this lounge was reeling 'em in..
In Short
With a totally revamped look and a double-its-size addition to its formerly small and crowded quarters, this lounge is still where low-key night owls make the rounds for cool cocktails and a relaxed scene. Even though it now has a street-front entrance, this famed back-alley bar still feels a little naughty. Inside, the mix of dark leather booths, exposed brick and a long, narrow wooden bar aren't necessarily inspired, but the place still manages to keep its previous (and now larger) appeal. As partners Ashley Joyce and Jeremy Thomas say, "The Room has always been a bar where people have felt comfortable; a refuge in Hollywood without the Hollywood attitude."
Dumb dirty spot to chill. This little itty bitty room, that is dark as hell, and often times funky...on a good night, has some grooves that will make you push and shove to the dance floor. Sure, the dance floor is about the size of my PT Cruiser but it is tolerable. Sure, you will sweat and have pit marks on your shirt, but you will have a good time.
Ugh!!!. This may very well be the worst bar I've ever stepped foot into. After a 2 block trek through a back alley, past ruffians from all walks of life. I walked into a bar which size literally lived up to it's name. People were grinding each other in some sort of mating ritual unbeknownst to me. I continues forward with resilience as I was literally suffocating on the foul ambience. After walking through the bar. (Which took 5 minutes of bumper to bumper, elbow to elbow traffic) I was dismayed and set aghast with the knowledge that there was only one way in and only one way out. After linebackering my way back to the portal in which I entered, I vowed never to set foot in this place again! I only hope any self respecting bar goer would do the same!
not the same,, but still good. The room seems to be getting discovered by everyone now,, it has lost a lot of that underground feel with all the tourists and no smoking...its still a fun place with a great crowd,,,music is all over the place,,Ive been giong for years and will keep going back.,,get there early and get a booth,, you'll make plenty of new friends because they will all want a place to sit.
Damn it's small.... But like the preface says, in a good way. It's very "Hollywood", a la the movie "Swingers" with the back alley entrance and no name. Keeps the tourists away. The "dance floor" is the 6 inches separating the bar from the DJ. Nice nonetheless. Just try not to do the running man or you're liable to send the speakers to the other end of the bar. Drinks are reasonable. Be careful on who you intend to pick up on cause it's pretty dark in there. Good place to stop by and check out cause it's always a crowded room. No pun intended.
Smokers No More!. The Room has been renowned for darkness and plumes of toxic smoke but the management recently put in place a NO SMOKING policy so all non-smokers can rejoice, you won't have to worry about waking up to your pillow and hair stinking like an ashtray!! Monday and Tuesday nights are really going off now - Monday has rotating DJ's and Tuesday's are DIRTY, a seriously eclectic rock night...definitely not stuff you'll be hearing anywhere else in Hollywood. The Room looks like it's definitely on an upswing...
I may take up smoking.... ... so that I can handle breathing The Room's smoke-infused air for more than 30 minutes. The crowd that has adopted the bar as their own feels genuine, cool, gregarious. Simply too dark to be subjected to the usual LA routine of looking-you-intently-up-and-down-just-in-case-you're-a-celebrity. Blessedly, noone will see you here unless you elect to stand near a candle.
Burn Your Clothes. If you can get past the fact that virtually everyone in the place smokes, and that it's kind of a dump, The Room is a pretty cool place. Great crowd, fitting no particular mold, and good music make up for a really small space and a tiny dance floor. Very outgoing group there makes this place a great spot to meet new people.
It's really just a room. The entrance is unmarked and around the back in an alley. The space is small and dark so bring a flashlight if you want to find your way to the unisex bathroom. They manage to squeeze in a turntable and a DJ who spins some kick ass hip hop and funk next to a 2 x 2 dance corner. (It does not constitute official "floor" status.) The best part is that the crowd is so friendly that no one cares that you're all on top of one another and you just end up dancing where you're standing. Well worth it. Just don't go if you're claustrophobic.
