The Scene
This whimsical, quaint National Historic Landmark may well be one of the most welcoming and alluring destinations in Southern California. With a history of celebrity (and celebrated) guests--Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Amelia Earhart, Steve McQueen and Elizabeth Taylor--the mission-style retreat is a popular spot for weddings and weekend getaways. In the late 1980s, it was rescued from the wrecking ball to the tune of $55 million.
The Details
The inn took 30 years to complete, incorporating design elements from throughout the Southwest, the Mediterranean and California missions. The sometimes unusual blending of architectural styles includes flying buttresses, domes, a bell tower, clock towers, interior courtyards and patios, a five-story open-air rotunda, a circular wrought-iron staircase and oddly placed small doors from old ships. Yet somehow, it all works. The enticing pool area--replete with beautiful hanging bougainvilla, lush foliage, soaring palms, a whirlpool and small fountain--is one of the hotel's highights.

The outdoor area rivals dinning any provincial European courtyard. However, the dining experience was ANY BUT. It was as if they were running short of staff and ran over to the local Denny's to find some help. When taking our order, I expected her to punctuate the orders with gum smacking. She proceeded to ignore us for the rest of the evening except for when she would say demanding things like, "If any of you want anything, NOW's the time to speak up" (while tapping her pencil). Our waitress must have brought the short-order cook with her. My friend's pasta dish with ground lamb tasted like HAMBURGER HELPER. My salmon was very dry. I hated it. Please do yourself a favor and go across the street to Mario's or find a Denny's so that at least you pay for what you get. UPDATE: The waitress was fired due to that incident and others.
