The Scene
When it first rolled out the red carpet in 1927, the Roosevelt was ground zero for industry hot shots like Louis B. Mayer. The hotel hosted the first Academy Awards in 1929, threw star-studded "This is Your Life" after-parties, and counted Marilyn Monroe as a repeat visitor. Legends never disappear--apparently, they return to haunt tourist-laden hotels. Staffers have been reporting inexplicable "incidents" since the building reopened in 1985 after major renovations. The well-rehearsed stories include a "cold spot" believed to be a man's spirit.

The Details
A sweeping, red valet carpet welcomes guests, but while the grand foyer was once over-the-top lush, it's been toned down to introduce a more minimalist feel, like that of area boutique properties. There are 302 rooms in all, including 80 suites and 65 cabana rooms. Restaurants include the Cinegrill, Theodore's Restaurant and the poolside Tropicana Bar.

I have lived in LA for 5 years, always drive by this hotel, heard good things, and wondered. So when guests came from San Diego, I suggested it for its great location, so we could walk to bars and restaurants, go to Teddy's, etc. From the second we arrived, every single person on staff was rude, obnoxious, and completely unhelpful. The front desk girls literally turned up their noses at us! We arrived early, couldn't check in until 3 p.m., so we went to Tropicana to have drinks and apps by the pool. The hostess gave us attitude, sitting us at the worst table in the house (right by a very loud speaker that was on its last leg, blaring out Bon Jovi songs). The people were all pretty gross - not glamorous at all, but girls with really bad implants who were going topless and making out with their hairy boyfriends poolside. The server took an hour to get every round, the food was bad and overpriced, and forget getting lounge chairs, as they were booked all day by noon. The bathroom was so small in our room, I am 5'4" and my knees were against the wall whenever I sat on the toilet. The fire alarm on the ceiling was hanging down loose off its wires (that made me feel safe), there were nail polish stains on the carpet, and even though there were three of us in the room, we only got two towels between us. Later that night, the doorman at Teddy's was unbearably rude and would not let us in, despite the fact that we were hotel guests, and when we called down to the front desk to complain, the guy said, "just because you're hotel guests doesn't guarantee entry into Teddy's...it's a private club, that's just the way it is..." It was July 4th, and the only people in line were ridiculously tacky tourists, and here we were, a hot blonde, and two brunettes with money to spend... RIDICULOUS. The next day, my friends promptly checked out and went to the Beverly Wilshire, which was an entirely different (and MUCH more upscale experience)!

This is one of the premier spot to be at for NewYears. Gotta get a room by the pool though...Loads of fun without driking and driving.

this hotel is pretty old and has a lot of history behind it but also a top line location for tourists. I have used it for years in my tour and travel experience, and all tourists loved it as they can walk to the Chinese Theather and all of the Hollywood must do stuff.
