Editorial Review for El Tepeyac – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
Outside, vendors ply cookies and trinkets to those waiting in line for the best burrito in L.A. Inside, a shrine to the Virgin Mary overlooks a dozen Formica tabletops crowded with families devouring the meaty behemoths.
The Food
El Tepeyac burritos are so big and unwieldy they can only be eaten with a knife and fork. The Hollenbeck burrito--a monstrosity of rice, beans, guacamole, chili and stewed pork jam-packed in a flour tortilla and topped with ranchero sauce--has earned its signature status. Unrepentant carnivores should go for the all-meat Oscar burrito. The shoebox-sized Manuel Special, a wet burrito with rice, beans, guacamole, chili and pork, could feed an entire family. Tacos, enchiladas and taquitos round out the menu, but burritos are El Tepeyac's raison d'etre.

Insider Tips
Save TimeBelly up to the counter, where there's always a seat. Warning: You can't move from the counter to a table.
Look GoodGo on a cheap, fun date that shows your local savvy. Look lovingly into each other's eyes over the $12 Manuel Special burrito--the two of you probably won't even finish it.

Ok so maybe I am a bit predjudiced but there are no better mexican places then LosAngeles and this is one of them(besides King Taco) I have been going here since I was in my mom's tummy and it is the best. Not that bland stuff everywhere else makes! Its hot, spicy, saucy, and very Mexican American. No skimping on flavor! of course my fav is the machaca plate and the hollenbeck burrito. Also us old school customers never call it El tepeyac we call it Manuel's(the orginal owners name) now it has gone up in price but hey thats the cost of living going up. So whenever I am in town I make sure to make a detour to Manuel's YUM!
Pros: Best Mexican Food, nice people, feels like family
Cons: parking, wait time

I have been eating at El Tepeyac for over 40 years. It is the best Mexican restaurant in the city -- huge and delicious buritos, incredible taquitos with a mountain of gucamole, and the best huevos ranchos. Also, Many, the owner, is the most friendliest, outgoing, and engaging owner in the entire country. He will make you feel like family in no time.
Pros: Food and service
Cons: none
