Great Happy Hour!!!!!!. Chaya Downtown is a really sexy spot. It has good food at a great price, in fact, one of the best "Happy-Hours" in Los Angeles. You definitely won't leave there hungry, or sober(depending on your earlier day at work). Best part about it, "It's for cheap" and a pretty classy enviroment filled with young and sexy professionals.

The bad side: There seemed to be a gnat problem in the bar area. Extremely annoying and a tad nasty. You end up using chopsticks to fight them off. Also, the booth seating is horrendously uncomfortable and made for Ewoks( small furry denziens from Star Wars III).

But overall the food is good and the service is the best. I will definitely continue to frequent here often. Yet, you won't see me near the bar until the gnats are gone. This place can easily be a five-star joint if this and the seating is corrected.

Good Happy Hour Food. I like the HH drinks here but they could be stronger. I usually get the Russian Blues cocktail. It's Skyy citrus vodka, a blueberry puree sweet and sour, soda water, and fresh blueberries. ($5)

For food we had:

-the anchovy: served with fennel and celery, a perfect combo! De-lish!

-calamari: lightly breaded, was very good

-lamb burger: very tasty and came with homemade potato chips. I could pass on those cuz they were a bit oily

-spicy tuna roll: a typical roll, but was good

-albacore roll: excellent

Each of these were $5, but HH appetizers run $3-7. Beers (bottled and drafts) were $5, wine were $5-6, and cocktails were $5.

The decor was very modern, with a bit of a 1920's feel behind the bar. This would be good place to meet up with a friend or co-worker. But a date? Mmmm.... maybe. During the day, it's pretty bright with all the floor to ceiling windows. I preferred it once the sun went down.

The Franco-Japanese fusion experts take on Downtown L.A.. You know you're on to something solid when a restaurant's design elements reflect the cuisine type. L.A.'s latest outpost of the exceptionally popular local sweetheart (other locations are in Venice and West Hollywood) is another posh fusion of sleek, Japanese modern chic with rich French/Western European flair that almost outdoes the others. The mirrored bar's light etchings, the incredibly colorful chandelier comprised of found "junk," a heated outdoor floor and impressive window views of downtown make for nice bells and whistles on top of its sweeping, contemporary design aesthetic. Dressed-up worker bees flit around the festive bar area for sparkling cocktails like the Kool as a Kucumber with Hendrick's gin and St. Germaine and the Seeing Red with orange and lavender-fused tequila, while serious foodies settle into the pleasantly formal dining room for tasty Kobe beef sushi rolls, roasted beets with bing cherries and creamy chevre, lobster and rock shrimp cake, pan-seared Hokkaido scallops, miso marinated white sea bass and filet mignon with black truffle sauce. Still hungry? Save room for the Meyer lemon tart and fallen chocolate cake--to name a few. There's also a great happy hour menu Monday-Friday from 3pm-7pm and Saturday from 5pm-7pm.
