Secreted away from the wild crawl of the Sunset Strip is where you'll find this picturesque English hideaway that was once home to Charlie Chaplin. Now, the iconic property, which was originally built in 1924, has been restored with 14 bungalows (11 of which are for B&B use, the other three for long-term stays), gorgeous gardens and that sort of insouciant Hollywood glamour a la Chateau Marmont. Each of the bungalows is named for the famous people who stayed there like Marilyn Monroe and Gloria Swanson. Reserve the Marlene or Betty ($350 daily) or Valentino ($500 daily, $10,000 per month) and…

Best place to stay in LA. Period.

The Charlie is just fantastic. I stay in LA for months at a time on work and The Charlie has become my home away from home. Its just a very special place. It truly feels like home away from. It's like a wonderful european estate tucked away in west hollywood. Everything is very private, very quiet, and very personal. The restoration work on this historical landmark was clearly done with care and attention to detail. One can brush off the stress of the day and just relax upon returning home. The owner and staff treat their clients like family. I have honestly, never, ever, been treated better. The apartments open onto private gardens and trees. Its centrally located. Near the best restaurants and nightlife, yet peaceful and relaxed. I can not recommend The Charlie enough. It's great!

The Charlie Hotel - The best hidden secret in West Hollywood

by melanie south africa at Citysearch

My partner and I are from South Africa and upon our arrival in Los Angeles, we started searching for the ideal place to stay in LA. I happen to stumble across an article in the Vanity Fair on a little hotel called The Charlie Hotel. I gave one look at the pictures and decided that this place sure looks promising enough to go and check it out. Little did I know what was waiting for us...

A magical world, hidden from the streets, unfolded in front of our eyes as we walked through the entrance of The Charlie Hotel. A magical fairy-like garden, with roses that are not only a feast for your eyes, but also a pleasantry for your nose, includes the odd curious squirrel and big, shiny black crows. We allowed the pleasant fragrance to lead us down the little path and discovered what makes this place so lovely: beautiful bungalows (built and furnished in 1920's story book style), a mutual wooden deck where you can host fancy tea parties, a little area by a fire place outside, where you and your loved one can share a glass of wine. Excellent service that includes housekeeping 5 days a week and fresh flowers every week. Add the very friendly and pleasant hotel owner with his staff here at The Charlie and you have found your home...away from home.

Best place to stay in Hollywood

by monica behan at Citysearch

When I first walked into the compound of the Charlie amongst all the beautiful roses and quietness, I had almost forgotten where I was. Certainly not in the center of Hollywood. I could feel the history here. I was greeted by Menachem who was like a long lost uncle waiting to welcome me. I stayed at the Ruth (named after Ruth Gordon as all the english bungalows are named after the stars who stayed there) and loved to open the front door to the gardens and let the sunlight without any noise, just the fountains and birds below. Menachem let me bring my piano in for my stay and my creativity has been flowing. He is so happy to accomadate whatever he can to make you feel happy and at home. There hasn't been a time that grounds manager Arturo was not there when we needed anythng!

Going back and forth to NY and LA so often, coming into the gates of the Charlie make me feel like I am home safe and sound.

OASIS

The Charlie is an absolute gem. Never have I been in a place so beautiful in the most unlikely setting. Tucked away in residential West Hollywood, The Charlie is LA's best kept secret. Each bungalow is designed to feel like a home away from home and upon stepping foot into any of them, you truly feel the ambiance. The inevitable sigh of relaxation escapes the moment you walk into the impeccable gardens. The staff makes you feel like you always lived here and are incredibly attentive and personable.

I am never going to a traditional hotel ever again. Why bother? When I can stay at an establishment that feels like my dream home.

In LA? ONLY place to stay!!

by traveler18 at Citysearch

i have traveled far and wide and have stayed at dozens of hotels in cities all around the world. many were enjoyable, but none memorable-until i stayed at The Charlie.

Not only were the location, staff, atmosphere, gardens....all outstanding, but the moment you walk in, you feel, like you could live there indefinitely without changing a thing!

There are gardens are superb and tastefully understated, and decks to sun yourself (if you choose). All this, incredibly, in the middle of West Hollywood; a stone's throw away from Beverly Hills and in the middle of the Melrose shopping area.

The place is an absolute prize. I had driven past it many times without even knowing it was there!

An absolutely stunning jewel brought back to life.

If you can, stay there when you are in LA.

If you live in LA, go for a few days. Treat yourself.
