just ok mercantile, amazing salad, full bags, like water, great experience, delicious blt
The mussels were terrific here, and the bread pudding was decadent. Happy hour includes discounts on wines over $10 and on charcuterie plates. On a warm night, the patio is a nice place to sit and watch the traffic while sipping wine.
this place blows!!.
I was REALLY hoping to it a home run with this place as it seemed to deliver all my fav things delicately wrapped-up in an open/airy french inspired location...right down the street from my house.
....there were MAYBE 6 customers in this place (sunday late afternoon), two waiters, a bartender and cook. we walked right in and sat at the bar. it took the bartender 10 minutes to ask us if we would like some water and if we were interested in seeing a menu......duh!?! when we did finally get a menu, it was piratically thrown in front of us as the bartender was walking from one side of the bar to the other. i actually had to yell, "excuse me....i have some questions about your wine selection....and i'd love some water too please"!! he brought our water over and when i tried to ask questions about their wine selection, he actually cut me off mid sentence and said, "hold on, i'll be right back".....and then he turned around and started counting change at the cash register right in front of us. i was in disbelief! AND.....he never came back. we gave him another 10 minutes to redeem himself but it never happened. i just feel like there weren't enough customers there nor was the cafe busy enough to warrant that kind of crappy customer service.
i'm not sure if i'll go back or not. my instincts tell me no.
Homemade Ice Cream, Beverages in Mason Jars(!).
I've been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch I had a BLT and for dinner I had a butter lettuce salad and some kind of small plate with chili sauce and a poached egg. The BLT was delicious while the butter lettuce was really sour and the egg dish was really salty. Based on that limited information, you can probably conclude that the Mercantile is good for lunch and just OK for dinner. Or not, whatever.
In any case, a selling point is that the restaurant also doubles as a shop, and sells relevant fooding goods that you can purchase. This is a great feature, as it combines my love for eating with my love for buying things. I didn't purchase anything either of the times I was there, but I appreciated the option.
On a sidenote, I thought that my favorite thing about this place would be the homemade ice cream. It turned out that my favorite things are the mason jars that they serve their beverages in. This made me so happy that I wanted to go home and put my drinkable liquids into mason jars and then drink it all.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Billing itself as the first "taste before you buy wine bar and shop," George Abou-Daoud's latest addition to L.A.'s eating and drinking scene is located right next to the CNN building. Local professionals flock to the space for splendid sandwiches, fresh salads and imported wines which are consumed en masse during happy hour come Fridays. But really any day of the week you'll find customers snacking on savory smoked trout sandwiches, frisse au lardon salads or even a "ploughman's lunch" (a selection of cheese, charcuterie and a baguette with stone ground mustard). The upscale lunch and early dinner fare comes reasonably priced (the "Alps" sandwich is only $7, for example) and the impossibly high ceilings leave an impression, making this an obvious choice for no-fuss Hollywood business meetings.
Wonderful New Place on Sunset!. I had a great experience at Mercantile - a fun, funky café/take-out/wine bar on Sunset, not far from the Arclight. I tried their amazing salad with chickpeas and almonds. The best salad I’ve had all year. The Ice tea was served in Mason Jars, a nice touch. I loved the selection of specialty food items for sale. They even sock fennel pollen which I’ve always wanted to try. I left with two bags full of goodies to play with in my kitchen.
