Overrated – I was looking very forward to trying this place as I have heard a ton of hype about. I have to admit I was not at all impressed with the food and honestly everything was deep-fried or had so much fat in it. The Burger was basically raw. I LOVED the broccoli then was told by my waitress that they “flash fry it”. Why in the world would you fry the one healthy thing on the menu when you can get the same result as roasting? Everyone said the bacon wrapped matzo balls were the thing to try but honestly they were nothing to write home about. The drinks are original and good and it’s a cool fun environment. However, if you want to go to the bathroom you have to go to the basement and it’s disgusting. The staff was incredibly friendly. I went with a group of 10 of us and none of us were impressed.
Citysearch Editorial Review – Former "Top Chef" winner Ilan Hall’s downtown restaurant may have a strange name (The Gorbals is named after an area in Glasgow where Hall's father was raised), but don't let that stop you from seeking this gem out. Despite a few hiccups in late 2009 (the restaurant briefly was forced to shut down after being cited by the city for an equipment violation), the restaurant has quietly made a name for itself with downtown diners, thanks to a whimsical meat-centric menu. Your vegan friends might be horrified by offerings such as Manischewitz-braised Pork Belly Ribs or Octopus with gizzards and lemon inside the dimly-lit space, but they should be able to find a few things to nibble on (such as Cucumber Salad sesame leaf with garbanzos). Plates are generally small, so don't expect to find yourself full on just one or two menu items here. The ideal situation for trying this 5th street curiosity is a large group where everyone can share plates tapas-style. Housed inside the historic Alexandria Hotel, The Gorbals is certainly not for everyone--bathrooms here are scary for some (and not even located directly inside the restaurant). But for foodie seeking a wild ride on the culinary cutting edge, Hall's steadily improving menu items such as his Rarebit with chicken egg offer something truly unique for downtown diners tired of the same old few upscale choices. That said, there are many kinks that still need to be worked out for a laid back restaurant that charges like a full-service West Hollywood hotspot (spotty service, reservation confirm calls that never come etc.). Still, we're giving The Gorbals a pass thanks to the innovative cuisine and Berlin-cool sparse interior perfect for impressing your most jaded hipster foodie friends.
