view & uploadloved chocolate cupcake w chocolate frosting, recommended first timer, order red velvet, awesome bakery, helpful staff, love babycakes, order cookies
Citysearch Editorial Review. Have a wheat allergy? Diabetic? Dairy intolerant? Or just want to eat healthy but still crave sweets? This all-vegan, mostly gluten-free bakery that originated in NYC will make you happy. Cupcakes--their specialty--come in gluten-free and spelt versions and most items are sweetened with agave. Others, like the Toasties (irresistible loaves in flavors like banana chocolate chip), have unrefined sugar. Standouts include cookie sandwiches (chocolate chippers stuffed with icing) and biscuits with jam and “cream.” There are only four chairs in the kitschy space but the helpful staff will bring out more to accommodate lingerers.
Fresh, healthy baked goods.
The moment I walked through the door I knew I was going to love Babycakes - the scent of fresh-out-of-the-oven vegan desserts was overwhelming! There was a line, as I expected, since Saturday is their busiest day, but it moved quickly. I have a feeling some of the customers had no idea it was vegan, since the shop really doesn't scream it. Unfortunately when it was my time to order I discovered that they were out of all of the items I was prepared to try: donuts, red velvet cupcakes, cookie sandwiches, and biscuit with jam. However, I wasn't disappointed with what was suggested for me to try.
I enjoyed:
chocolate chip cookie ~ one of the best I've ever had, chewy and crispy, very unique flavor
chocolate cupcake w/ chocolate frosting ~ loved the frosting, cake was moist
banana chocolate chip loaf ~ really good, moist, fresh, lots of chocolate chips
mini banana chocolate (muffin?) ~ tasted similar to the loaf
vanilla macaroon ~ mediocre, very soft, not much flavor
brownie bite (thought it was a cupcake at first) ~ mediocre, taste like a brownie
Awesome bakery for vegans and food allergies.
Vegan? Gluten Allergy? Special Diet Requirements? Then babycakes, in all its adorably decorated glory, will satisfy your sweet tooth.
When I walked into babycakes for the first time I was overwhelmed with options, cuteness, good smells and adorable uniforms. When I noticed the book of art from Valley of the Dolls I knew these were my people. I asked the other patrons waiting for their orders what they recommended a first timer: Red Velvet Cupcake, Cookie Sandwiches, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Donuts.
Duly noted. I order a Red Velvet and 2 cookies as a gift for my friend and a chocolate covered donut for myself. They boxed up the gift in a super cute bright pink box with the BC logo on it and tied it up with ribbon. "These are a few of my favorite things" was playing in my head the entire time.
The donut was supposed to be for "later" but it only lasted about 15 minutes staring at me from the corner of my desk, before I gave in and devored it's chocolatey goodness.
It was damn good, kinda crispy, smooth, cakey, chocolatey.
The point is... go there. Eat some of this.
