May 14, 2013

A cheap eats place that's perfect for grabbing pho, noodles or a decent bahn mi.

Inexpensive, big portions, great place to slurp noodles. Chicken pho tastes like homemade chicken soup.

There is certainly better pho in town, but Viet's spicy sardine bahn mi is worth the trip. Cheap, quick and satisfying. The only thing better is to get an iced Vietnamese coffee too!

Tips for Viet Noodle Bar

Modern Vietnamese in a storefront setting. If you're expecting super-cheap Vietnamese, Atwater Village's Viet Noodle Bar will disappoint but if you want excellent ingredients, innovative preparations and house-made soy milk, this IS the place. A must have the: the lemongrass chicken banh mi or the shitake tofu banh mi--both come on fresh, airy baguettes, though small, these sandwiches pack a flavorful punch. Pho choices are pretty standard but all good. The candied ginger soy curd is an amazing dessert--also house made. Beer is now available and credit cards are accepted. Sit at the long communal table for an urban experience; an adjacent room has small tables.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Part modernist showroom, part tasty homemade noodle house, Viet Noodle is impeccably designed, with a long wood communal table as it’s centerpiece. One wall is stacked with paperbacks for those looking to “read it and eat it” and a vintage scooter sits in a far corner. This sleek, whimsical update on the traditional pho noodle joint is reflected not only the décor here, but on the menu as well. Rice noodles are handmade daily in a kitchen where unexpected combinations and flavors seem the norm. Fresh white fish and chicken meatballs float among the lemongrass in Viet Noodle’s take on the pho soup classic. The broth-less Bun Tang dishes sport titles such as Mushroom and Soyskin. The French-inflected banh mi sandwiches come on crusty/chewy baguettes filled with a variety of culinary experiments, such as tofu and shitake mushrooms, organic chicken or spicy sardine. There is also a selection of incredible house-made soy milks in a host of unlikely, but yummy flavors...a chewy black sesame, mint and cinnamon. This is obviously not the place for those set on tradition. Instead, owners are creating their own takes on Vietnamese basics.
