full sports coverage, big party, worst sports, sketchy location
Worst "sports bar" ever!.
This place should be called "Posers." I was pumped to see a new sports bar in the neighborhood but was leery of checking it out after the recent 187 across the street. Then the Urban Daddy email came through announcing the "grand opening" about the time I was figuring out where to watch the UFC fights on Saturday. I got a big party jazzed about going to the new sports bar that totes, "we'll never charge you to walk through our doors for special events like UFC or any other special sporting events."
My friends were skeptical about the sketchy location, so I said I would scout it out since I live a few blocks away. When we got there we thought it was cute that they put velvet ropes up at a sports bar across the street from a murder scene less than 2 weeks ago. Having promoted in Hollywood in the past, I appreciated the effort. However, when the door girl (you must be so proud working the door at a sports bar in Wilshire Vista) asked me whose list I was on, I almost choked. I told her that I didn't realize it was that kind of place, but I was willing to play along and asked her who the promoters were, since there are few promoters in LA I don't know. She looked at the door guy, who dismissed her glance, and then told me it was $20 per head if I wasn't on her coveted list.
Obviously this was an extra special, super secret event to go against the "local" theme. I haven't paid a cover charge since I was on spring break several years ago in Mexico, and I certainly was not going to give this silly broad $60 for my party to get into a "local" sports bar in the barrio.
Needless to say, my party and I will get our usual table at Big Wang's tonight for the fights since I don't know whose list to get on to get into the new hot spot in Wilshire Vista. I can't wait to check Perez Hilton or Wire Images for the pics of the high profile opening.
In conclusion, how can you be a sports bar with "full sports coverage" on the West Coast and not open until 6pm PST on weekends? This is as good of an idea as the Jump-to-conclusions mat. What's the under on doors closing or name change/re-branding? I'm going with 2 months.
