What Our Expert Scouts Say

La Descarga
May 14, 2013

Enter through a wannabe Narnia-esque closet and down into a cutesy little Latin-themed hall with a live band and burlesque dancers. It's a rum bar with a cigar lounge. The place ain't big but that's why there's a mandatory guest list.

The jazz band and the burlesque dancers are a sight to see. I come here just to watch them. It can get crowded so try a weekday and you need to be on the guestlist.

The Houston Brothers do it again with La Descarga. A Havana-induced sense of cool that says yes to cigars, Cubano soul, and the chic style that the 30s and 40s era can bring. This is the bar you go to when you want to escape into another time ...

This is one sexy cool bar! From the entrance to the cigar room, La Descarga takes you to a different time. Their rum selection can't been beat. Great place to impress friends, great place to escape LA.

WORST DOOR MAN IN LA - (bad crowd) STAY AWAY. Went here on a Thursday @ 10:30pm. It was pouring rain that night...The place was packed inside and had a small line out the door with everyone trying to huddle under the tiny tent they rented for the night. I was on a date. Charles (The door man) told us it would be a minute but hang tight...In the 20 min we waited in the cold and rain he let in about 30 people in front of us...most of them guys...I asked what the deal was and his response: "I am doing the best I can". In reality Charles is just your standard incompetent door man and also a complete dick! It would have been really easy to say the wait was going to be a while especially considering it was pouring and cold...For a place that claims to be a "hidden gem" it is just as Hollywood as every other venue in LA except the crowd that flocks to it is below average.... STAY AWAY...NOT WORTH YOUR TIME!

Rum da dum dum. I love it when a place decides that YOU have to search to find it, la descarga is just that, tucked away in the back of nowhere, just cool... drinks are solid here, a little hot when it gets goin but that's why we're in Cali anyway...

hands down a must go bar in LA. a great entrance, a great vibe, fantastic customer service - and an amazing selection of rums. Some cocktails better than others. But its great to bar to a bar where the women are always dressed up.

recommend reservations fro Friday and Saturday nights. Tuesdays are dead.

Takes drinking to "The Next Level". I don’t go to Koreatown, but when I heard about this rum-centric speakeasy I had to make an exception. The entrance is pretty nondescript which initially made me question my decision, but this “secret entrance” just adds even more to the whole speakeasy, old-timey theme of the joint. Once you step inside, you are transported to good old days of Havana. There’s a main room where you can catch live performances every hour or so throughout the evening. But the coolest part of the bar might be the separate cigar room in the back. While the sparkle of the speakeasy idea, Cuban dancers, and a cigar bar might draw customers in, the backbone of this spot is their incredible rum based cocktails. If you really know your rum, then there are dozens of rare rums for you to enjoy. However, if you’re like most, and just want to order a fun cocktail, then you MUST get “The Next Level” which is served in a hollowed out ice sphere. The drink itself is Jamaican rum, coconut water, lemon juice, fresh cane syrup, and coconut extract. It’s so cool and definitely not something you can find anywhere else. La Descarga is great for a night when you want to dress up, grab a mojito and sit back with a cigar.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Koreatown gets a taste of old Havana with this hidden 1930s-esque rum bar marked by a blazing neon sign. Guests who enter this low-lit lair are welcomed inside through a covert door that leads the way to a lively scene. In addition to nearly 70 different varieties of rare rums, the bar lives up to its "after party" Spanish namesake with weekend night cabaret shows where scantily-clad burlesque dancers sashay to the beat of Conga drums and saxophone sounds. Industry barflies in button-downs and would-be models in cocktail dresses mingle near a white marble bar sipping on cocktails like Honey Swizzle and Bad Spaniard.
