The atmosphere was great. Atmosphere was great, food was pretty good, and the tequilla room was pretty neat. If you guys are looking for a nice night out to grab some drinks at the bar and have some good mexican food, go ahead and give this place a try. I'm sure you'll like it. It's kind of high end, but it IS in melrose =]
Amazing. Wow! Worth the wait. We tried to make reservations but couldn't get in for some time but now I know why. This place was outstanding. From the food to the decor to the service! Will definitely be returning soon!
In short, Red O was disappointing.
We had reservations - but were left waiting for more than 20 minutes. Once our table was available, we were told we had to wait an additional 10 minutes or so while the staff tried to locate chairs to fit the table.
The host staff was extremely rude when - after 15 minutes - we asked when we'd be seated.
Half of our dishes (3 out of 6 main courses) came out cold. The warm dishes were good though.

Drinks were good (we had a few during our long wait).
The best feature of the restaurant was its deor.
The group I was with made the experience worth while.
beautiful decor, nice staff, pricey. Nice atmosphere, friendly bartenders, celebrity hot spot. Pricey and small portions, but worth a night out to get dressed up and have a few laughs. Not really Mexican food per se, but to be expected from this type of place.

in a city with thousands of places for Mexican food - this is NOT the one to visit. Expect attitude at the door, an interesting and pleasing environment, and food that is very forgettable.
After being basically accosted at the valet, the door and the "hostess", we were shocked that the waiter was pleasant - although under trained.
To be fair, some of the food was pleasant, but undistinguished - a cut above Acapulco or El torito, but by no means where you would expect to see real Mexicans going to get good food.
Would not return.
Rude valets - never got in the door. I had heard such great reviews about this place. I was driving by and decided to do something nice for a friend and buy him a gift card. It is one of the 2 rainy days in the year. There's no available parking on Melrose, and it's in the middle of a no parking neighborhood, but I figured it would be easy enough to stop at the valet for 2 minutes to run in and buy a gift card. Wrong! They were so rude. Told me I couldn't stop there unless I was valeting. There was nobody in line and I was the only car there. I never write these reviews but was so shocked I had to say something. Please get a new valet company. I really want to try your food and be able to recommend you, but the valet has left such a bad taste in my mouth.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Not heading to some romantically swish resort in Mexico? No problemo. Red O, celebrated chef Rick Bayless' first restaurant outside of Chicago, has the tropical retreat vibe on lock. (If you can get past the doorman and guayabera-clad valets manning the imposing industrial entrance. Seriously. You'd think this was an SBE club or something.) Towering potted palms, a vaulted glass ceiling adorned with 14-foot chandeliers, white wicker furniture and a glass tequila tunnel and lounge are all here, not to mention a gorgeous bar area (two handmade leather swings included) where bartenders whip up luscious cocktails. The menu, which Bayless himself says is all about "Mexican spirit with local expression," is careful to source local ingredients as much as possible, although there are exceptions. "We use avocados from a farm in Michoacan because they have a very specific flavor," says Bayless. While the mole en poblano is not as rich and flavorful as the 27 ingredients seem to promise, standouts include the chunky guacamole served with chips and two salsas (tomatillo and guajillo) and any of the taquitos (duck, chicken, shrimp) that are smoked over different woods to impart a distinctively smoky flavor. Other standards range from enchiladas, ceviche and tacos to "Mexico's Celebrated Seven" that includes carne asada, cochinita pibil and camarones al mojo de ajo (garlic shrimp).
Dined at Red O last night for the first time. It was a good experience.
My date was sick, so I was solo for the evening. Still wanting to try it, I stopped by 2 hours ahead of my scheduled reservation. The staff was very accommodating and said that I could eat at the bar if I wished. Since the bar was full, the bald guy at the reception area came up and told me that I could eat at the big table, as well. He couldn't have been nicer. The waitress (Melissa) was excellent.
The only negative is that it can be a little noisy. I guess that's the tradeoff for a cool design and a busy place, but this is a small negative in light of all of the positives.
Someone wrote and complained about the "bouncer" outside. I think it's actually a positive. The "bouncer" ensures that people without a reservation don't get in. It's really nice to find a restaurant which isn't jammed jammed beyond capacity, or overcrowding the bar.
The food was very good, service was attentive. I'll go back with friends.
Food is Not Worth the Ridiculously Terrible Customer Service.
This was my second trip to Red O tonight because we really enjoyed our first visit; I will seriously reconsider ever coming back.
Rick should be embarrassed to have his name on or associated with this restaurant.
We had a 9:30pm reservation and didn't get seated until 10:20pm - almost an hour later. We were there to celebrate a special occasion.
Let me start by saying that there has been a lot written in reviews (try LA WEEKLY) about how poor the management is and about the bad attitudes from the front door/hostess and now I totally get it. Let me also say that I have never seen MORE people employed to run a restaurant that was such a complete clusterf*ck. There were 3 female hostesses + one slightly older woman who seemed like the senior hostess, 2 restaurant managers, 2-3 doormen/bouncer guys JUST FOR THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE. Ridiculous.
When we checked in at 9:30pm on the dot, one of the hostesses tried to be vague and squirrel-y about when we would actually get seated so I knew right then we were in for it. I lost track of how many times this same hostess called me "honey" too which is just so unprofessional and inappropriate; I wanted to punch her. Please don't add insult to injury by patronizing someone who is hungry.
We kept checking back every 10min with no seeming progress.
35 minutes past our reservation time, I approach one of the managers to explain what was going on. This guy (with the longer combed back hair) could not have been less interested or more apathetic to the situation telling me there's nothing he could do. He seemed annoyed to have to be dealing with the situation.
Hostess Who Calls You Honey then explains to me that we just have to "wait for people to leave" so we can get a seat. Really? THAT is how seating works? Who knew.
40+ minutes in and then Manager #2 comes over to our party to tell us he's sorry - no wait, that he's "sincerely sorry" as if this profound apology is meaningful to us at this point. DO SOMETHING, DUDE. Manager #2 offered to get us drinks - I explained we don't drink. Our guest of honor suggested taquitos and I told him i was sure he could figure out some way to make up for it. I also explained we were there for a special occasion and that at this point I felt we had made a mistake which ruffled his feathers. Apparently, we're not allowed to be annoyed having been made to wait almost an HOUR but everyone make sure not to offend Manager #2's delicate sensibilities.
We were finally sat at a table for 2 (being a party of 3) and of course, nothing was comped or brought over.
I'm sorry. This isn't rocket science. Mistakes happen. If you overbook and keep your clientele waiting beyond what's reasonable MOST people will understand and get over it if you make some gesture of good will to acknowledge it, not just an empty, lame apology. It's called customer service and common sense.
Our waitress was lovely and attentive, thank goodness.
The food is quite delicious but honestly, this is LA and there is plenty of good to great eating at places that really do care about giving you a great overall experience. It wasn't just us either, there was a whole slew of people getting the shaft.
Places like this just aren't worth it.
Good food does not a good restaurant make.
Completely Disappointed.... This was my second visit to Red O and I had to edit my review. Let's start with the fact that we had an 8:30 p.m. reservation and did not get seated until 9:45 p.m What professional establishment does that?? As a frequent diner at upscale eateries...i was shocked. Did they even offer us a drink or a complimentary dessert..NO. Did Red O overbook..or is it just poor reservation management. Red O does not realize that they might be the popular spot right now but you have to count on repeat customers to keep a restaurant open. In L.A. restaurants come and go...customer service is huge. I hope they change for the better because the food is great.
