There's plenty of vintage charm within the Rowan Building walls, which date back to 1911 and once housed Owl Drugs, from the retro spinning barber pole down to the vintage clippers. While services include straight-razor shaves, clipper cuts and even shoe polishes, compliments of Mr. Happyfeet, that's about where the anachronistic elements end. Owner Matt Berman, aka "Mohawk Matt" (we'll let you guess why), is as serious about creating a Downtown LA community as he is about coiffing. And if his waist-to-neck tattoo of a barbershop scene is any indication, the man's heart is clearly in the right place. What that means for clients is frosty mugs of draft root beer, an antique shuffleboard table, a Rockola jukebox and plasma TVs equipped with Playstation. In other words, a dude's dream hangout. It's the kind of place that offers free mullets on Mondays and the guy next to you may be getting anything from a pomp to a hipster moustache trim, or even a boring ol' business cut. Not surprisingly, the place is popular with 20- and 30-somethings, and the shop stays open late from Thursday through Saturday. Don't expect Super Cuts prices, or quality, but you'll get plenty of bells and whistles with your service.
