Citysearch Editorial Review. Named after a Vietnamese herb, Tiato is much like a secret garden tucked away along an otherwise office-centric area of Santa Monica. (It's located at the MTV/Lions Gate building.) Opened in late June 2010 by the An family--they're the ones behind Crustacean in Beverly Hills and the gorgeous Anqi at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa--the huge, eco-friendly indoor/outdoor space has a cool bar, mini-farmers' market on weekends (so convenient!), a to-go cafeteria, full-service cafe and lovely outdoor patio surrounded by an herb garden that includes tiato, of course. Almost everything on the menu is delicious, including the Sunday brunch, minty tiato macaroons, turkey taco salad, spicy eggplant tofu and eye-catching turmeric-poached salmon ... yes, it's bright yellow, but that's no artificial coloring.
