Citysearch Editorial Review. A favorite for hikers, dog walkers and those who simply enjoy the great outdoors, Elysian Park offers 600 acres of free public space. (It was granted to the community when the city of Los Angeles was founded in 1781.) In addition to the plethora of natural vegetation, there are hiking trails, a central picnic area with barbecue pits, a small man-made lake and a children's play area.
