The Scene – Conan the Barbarian and the Incredible Hulk (aka Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno) lifted weights at the Venice, Calif., flagship years ago, but even today, customers frequenting charter locations are bound to encounter serious muscle. Take note: The boys with bulging biceps are the mascots, not the majority. – – The Workout – Gold's generally offers Spinning, aerobics and kickboxing classes, yet the core of the program has always been weight training. Dumbbells and barbells, not spa-like amenities, are the rule. Ultimately, stalwarts at this gym…
Editor's Tips
- The Extras:
- For $25 a session, join the small Pilates class and get your own Reformer machine. With only six people in each class, members get lots of personal attention.
- Know Before You Go:
- If you forget your water, you can grab a bottle out of the fridge downstairs. The price is $2 for one liter.
- Look Good:
- Wow your friends on the dance floor with moves you've picked up in classes like All That Groove, Hip-Hop and Latin Grind.
Don't go unless you want to get ripped off!

Many of the reviews on citysearch are probably from people who work here. I know many places that make their employees write fake reviews. If you go to a google search you will see the real reviews. They act very nice when you go in and distract you from what you're doing just so that you can sign up without reading the contract. They don't tell you that they are locking you into a contract and there is a fee to cancel. They tell you about classes but don't tell you that many of them cost extra and aren't included in your fee. I complained that I was given false information when I signed up and the guy tried to lie and say he was giving me a discount when what he was really doing was changing my membership plan which took away some of my benefits! This is one of the only gyms in l.a that won't allow you to go to it's other gyms anytime -something they also don't tell you. Once I complained the happy demeanor of the staff quickly changed. It seems they're only nice while tricking you into signing up-after that forget about it!
You can get free weights anywhere-this gym is not worth the money you will pay for it.
- Pros: Great classes, not a pick up scene, huge facility
- Cons: Shady practices, the best classes cost extra, rude staff
POORLY MAINTAINED EQUIPMENT
by INJURED PARTY
I have been injured a few times at Gold's Gym Hollywood, because of machines that are not maintained regularly. The repairs are monkey rigged and parts are replaced many times with items that are not proper or safe. The gym is filthy as well as the bathrooms and locker rooms.
When you join you sign a contact that says if you are injured on the equipment Gold's does not accept liability. My front Deltoid muscle was torn last March by a piece or equipment that the bushings were loose and when doing the exercise properly the machine slipped because of the loose fittings and it ripped my deltoid, and caused a neck injury as well.
Gold's is fighting the claim - but you can not contract out negligence. UNSAFE, UNMAINTAINED EQUIPMENT.
Anyone else who has had similar claims please contact me... we will not sit still and let them get away with negligence at the safety of the members. Contact me at: kacohn@aol.c o m
Thank you!
- Pros: Location and Friends work out there
- Cons: DANGERIOUS UNMAINTAINED EQUIPMENT

This is a fine place to work out if you don't mind cold air conditioned air being blown onto your face while you are on any cardio machine . If you are effected by cold air I would not recommend wasting your time or money.
Aside from that, it is a moderately maintained and moderately clean. It's nothing fancy but, you do get what you pay for. Parking is available one block away.
- Pros: it's cheap
- Cons: too cold + serious artificial wind chill factor
not just for the muscle-bound

I've been at this gym for 3 years and I couldn't be happier. yeah, there is plenty of free-weight, plate-loaded, and traditional machines for pumping iron, as well as numerous cardio contraptions....however, it should be known that the gym has an extensive list of classes, all taught by highly qualified, energetic, and engaging instructors...everything from yoga and pilates to kick-boxing, hip-hop, or spinning. i barely even lift weights at all anymore (i used to live for it!) but i still feel like i'm at the best gym for just about anything i want to do for my workouts! also, the nice tanning beds and delicious smoothie options certainly add to the experience!
For the serious

If you're looking for the latest fly-by-night trend, this isn't the gym for you. Although the Hollywod face-lift last year added a trendy juice bar, this gym is still aimed to the serious weight-lifter and excerciser. Gold's Gym has all the right equipment and layout for those who come to workout and lift weights. The equipment is always in working order and even during peak time it isn't too hard to get on the machines you need. There's also a great selection of classes from step to yoga.
- Pros: excellent equipment, free parking, classes
- Cons: no sauna, no pool
