Iconic beachfront property with a distinguished past opens.. Who cares if you're not a card-carrying member of the nearby Jonathan Club? No membership is required to use this year-round facility--which features volleyball and beach tennis courts, a cafe, children's play areas and gardens--just a few steps from the Santa Monica beach. While the original mansion built by William Randolph Hearst for mistress Marion Davies was demolished by a previous owner, the estate's larger-than-Olympic-size pool, an original guesthouse, and several cabanas have been preserved and renovated. For a complete private beach club experience on the cheap, visitors can pay $10 to use the marble-tiled community pool where Charlie Chaplin and other Hollywood stars once splashed around. Even better, discounts are available for seniors, children, and families.
