Editorial Review for The Balboa Bay Club & Resort – by Mar Yvette
In Short
Located on 15 acres of white sand along a posh 144-ship marina, this venerable property has been a private institution whose members have included presidents, royalty and celebrities. What many travelers don't know is that the club also hosts a 132-room hotel. A subdued palette, punctuated with an occasional splash of canary yellow or red coral, underscores the hotel's simple yet stylishly sporty vibe. Guests can access the health club, swimming pool and tennis, basketball and racquetball courts.
Hits: Staff will gleefully fill you in on the club's cheekily titled "Wall of the Dead"--a collection of hanging photos of past guests including President Ronald Reagan, John Wayne and Greta Garbo.
Misses: While most folks probably enjoy staring at the multimillion dollar yachts docked alongside the property, it risks imparting an "aquatic parking lot" quality instead of a "peaceful waterfront" setting.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoDon't let the posh factor scare you off--the hotel rooms can be suprisingly affordable. Check online or via phone.
The ExtrasFormer member and club governor John Wayne is a beloved figure 'round these parts--Duke's Place is a lively bar that pays homage with numerous photos of the star in his mariner-theme films.
Where to SitDine anywhere but behind the piano in the First Cabin Restaurant for lovely marina views and people-watching.

We just recently(as in saturday, two days ago) had a birthday celebration at the First Captains Table. The food was terrible and SLOW!!!! Our dinner reservations were at 645 and we werented served dinner until 9! The bartender messed up about 50% of our drinks, we later found out that the bartender was the manager!!!! Several dinners arrived cold and under or over cooked. I ordered the lobster, worst I have ever had, insanely chewey, served with no melted butter on the side, my baked potatoe came cold and with no condiments and the vegtables were under cooked. When i asked for condiments that brought me Tarter sauce for my lobster(unheard of) and I had to ask an additional 2 times for the items for my baked potatoe. It was a birthday so a complimentary desert was served but the 3 other people that ordered desert never received theres! Save your time, Save your money, and head to Five Crowns or Mastros Ocean!!!!
Pros: The View
Cons: The Bartending, the food, and the service.

My family (wife and 3 kids) and I stayed at the hotel a few nights. The hotel has been beautifully remodeled since my wife and I stayed there 10+ years ago. The rooms were spotless, the beds comfortable and the service was excellent. The grounds are beautiful with an outstanding pool setting and great views from the patio of the harbor. Duke's patio was perfect for cocktails for the parents and apps for the kids. We will be back and share the news about the facelift to the property.
