What People Are Saying About The Hollywood Corner

Featured Review

This popular Highland Avenue restaurant (formerly Doughboys) has been steadily winning over area office workers and residents alike with comfort food classics. A revamped menu in early 2010 has pleased health food fans, as the Corner (as its colloquially known) now proudly offers heart-friendly favorites (see their excellent veggie sandwich) alongside cholesterol clogging (but oh so good!) dishes like their sausage and eggs "pressed jack" sandwich, which uses pancakes instead of bread and is presented like a panini. And while brunch-style egg dishes remain popular here, lunch business is…

OVERPRICED MEDIOCRE AND SMALL QUANTITIES. AVOID!

by DanKatzir

For awhile this place was called Doughboys cafe when the original was shut down on 3rd street. But now the original is re opened and this place is called Hollywood Corner.

Indeed it's a cafe/diner on the corner of a random street not close to anything and serving a lot of businesses around it.

But unlike it's Doughboys days when the place was packed - now the place is mostly empty.

They are over priced, the food is mediocre at best and the quantities are small.

Dough boys also wasn't cheap but at least you got a huge portion of food.

Here you are paying $12 for a Turkey Sandwhich with barely any vegetables and they give tiny portions of everything.

Chili bowl is small and they give a miniscule token piece of bread that didn't even taste fresh.

On Highland and Melrose is Raffaellos Italian restaurant that has much better and larger Turkey sandwhich for $6.

Both places are decent lunch places very close to one another serving local businesses in the area and that's why the question is raised why does one ask double for similar food?

The coffee isn't tasty and the waiters don't really care and don't refill unless you manage to capture their attention.

This place really raises questions who is their target audience?

Is it people who like to pay double for everything?

Is it people who like to get mediocre food in small quantities?

Is it random people who by mistake walk into this place not located close to anything?

They lost me as a client. I've tried them several times because I worked close by.

Until they change their menu, their policy an their pricing I'm done with them.

A great place to eat and relax

by viajerouniversal

So... I've had a chance to eat at the Hollywood Corner on several occasions in the last year and haven't left yet without some left-overs and a smile on my face. The food, the service and the environment are all what you would hope for in a home style breakfast/lunch joint. I’ve been in a few times when I was not rushed and have had time to speak a little with the staff; the servers and management are genuinely friendly, no forced smiles. I’ve actually brought several groups of friends by for the happy hour they have on Fridays. They have a solid selection of good beer and wine, haven’t tried any mixed drinks yet but my friend said the bloody mary was great.

I don’t have any kids but I’ve noticed that, especially during breakfast hours, the place is very family friendly. It’s a well-balanced spot, I was able to savor a relaxing breakfast with my girlfriend and still enjoy the feel of a cozy, family restaurant. The outdoor seating is fun if it’s a nice day. The food, in my experience thus far, has been served quickly though this does not seem to in any way detract from the quality of the dishes. I've never been remotely disappointed and I tend to be pretty particular about food I'm not making myself. The sweet potato fries are a must with any meal!

I’ve eaten there mostly for breakfast or lunch, only had one dinner and was impressed by how well they were able to transform the place into a romantic little alcove. My girlfriend and I loved the grilled salmon. We split a bottle of wine and stayed for over 2 hours. She and I live in San Diego and make a point to eat here whenever we pass through Los Angeles. It’s nice to have a mellow spot with reasonable, consistently well-made food.

Keep it up, we'll be back soon

Great Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

by daveabed

I'll be adding this spot to the lunch rotation! I went for lunch and got the Tex Mex Flatbread, which is basically a pizza. It was a tasty combination on spicy pulled chicken, corn, tomatoes, lots of fresh avocado and a few other things. I thought the price was pretty reasonable too. The service was also good, with our waitress checking in on us often, always with a smile. Since it was lunch I was not in the mood to be drinking, but they do have a great selection of wine and beer - even the Barney Stout. I will definitely be checking out the night life here sometime soon.

  • Pros: Quality Menue, Drink Menue
  • Cons: Pricey
