The Scene – At the upscale end of Robertson sits a quaint Italian ice-cream parlor where a friendly waitstaff helps you indulge your sweet tooth and savory cravings. – – The Food – No matter how much commercial ice cream makers trumpet the quality of their ingredients, there is nothing like small, handmade batches of fresh, frozen cream. Gelato is denser than the average American-style ice cream, and Al Gelato's is lush, smooth and packed with flavor. Fruity selections are rich and vibrant. Chocolate-themed flavors explore the nuances of cocoa and butterfat, and the…

Editor's Tips

Parking:
If you can't find a metered spot on Robertson; try one of the side streets like Gregory Way.
Save Time:
If you don't see your favorite flavor in the front case, ask them to check the freezer in the back.
Know Before You Go:
Al Gelato only takes cash. There's an ATM at the market across the street and the closest bank is at Wilshire and Robertson.

dessert
83.92999649047852% positive
  1. While Al Gelato has been one of my favorite desert places for years, I must say that everytime I visit I pray the owner is not scooping gelato that day.
  2. like chocolate hazelnut.
  3. But it depends if you like gelato's rich texture over plain old ice cream.
  4. must say that their desserts( especially the tiramisu) is this side of heaven but their food is overpriced and oversauced.
  5. The best is chocolate chip, sounds maybe a bit boring, but not here.
  6. The cannoli, gelato with real whipped cream and the tiramisu were also great.
  7. ice cream is good, get it and eat at home so you dont have to deal with the nasty waitresses.
  8. Good ice cream, not good everything else.
  9. If you feel the need to have a bit of dinner with your dessert, though, they offer a really tasty house salad.
  10. The chocolate hazelnut is wonderfully authentic.
  11. The wait staff stated they could not serve nor allow us to sit outside on the curb with our dog and enjoy our desert.
  12. Amazing dessert
  13. Since there are tables outside I thought it would be a nice place to have some ice cream.
  14. Outstanding desserts
  15. like ice cream so I don't mind dropping by for some at Al Gelato every now and then.
  16. could buy a couple of pints of Haagan Daz for the same amount, which is probably 10 times as much ice cream and just as good (if not better).
  17. good ice cream, gourmet prices
  18. Everything is vastly overpriced, from the sandwiches to the deserts.
  19. Also chocolate, and hazelnut, strawberry and other fruits very good.
  20. found the pie crust curiously hard and stiff (kind of like a tasteless Chicago pizza shell), but the fillings were great.
  21. The gelato wasn't horrible overall - if you're in the neighborhood anyway and want some dessert, I wouldn't avoid the place - but certainly not worth going out of your way for.
  22. The gelato and the other desserts are outstanding.
  23. The best ice cream I have ever had and the ambiance is delightful.
  24. The gelato's alright because they let you choose between fresh whipped cream on top or a sample scoop of another flavor.
  25. Again, dont get me wrong, the ice cream is good, but dont expect TOO much!
  26. And all their desserts are outstanding.
  27. Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles.
  28. Also, all the chocolate based ones are amazing.

  1. The gelato and ice are tasty and rich.
  2. usually order the meat ravioli which comes in the best marinara sauce!
  3. Delicious food and great staff
  4. Their NY style pizza I rate one of the best in the city, a superb Pesto sauce (we had over rigatoni), and amazing garlic bread (and regular bread) made on the premises.
  5. Truly a great find in a city starved for good Italian food.
  6. The food is fairly good and they have one of the sweetest sauces I have ever had.
  7. you have to get the rigatoni (i don't like red sauce, but i love theirs!)
  8. If you still have room have the meat ball before you cool off with some fabulous gelato.
  9. The gelato's alright because they let you choose between fresh whipped cream on top or a sample scoop of another flavor.
  10. Best price, Best food, Best Italian in LA
  11. The chocolate hazelnut is wonderfully authentic.
  12. If you feel the need to have a bit of dinner with your dessert, though, they offer a really tasty house salad.
  13. Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles.
  14. Hot, baked bread with thick crunchy crust is offered with the main entrees - and not to mention the delicious olive tray.
  15. great food
  16. have heard the pizza and Italian food are great as well, although we have yet to try it.
  17. Everything is vastly overpriced, from the sandwiches to the deserts.
  18. By far, Al Gelato has the best red sauce and meatballs in LA.
  19. The Gelato is good, is tasty and fresh but you can get this in so many places, since they dont make their own.
  20. If you desire to stuff you face and belly, go for it because the portions are very large, however the pastas and sandwiches are not good and not Italian.
  21. got a small and the portion was HUGE and the soup was fantastic.
  22. love love love the open face meatball sandwich.
  23. Fresh pasta, perfect sauce - their meatballs and chicken cutlet are a perfect companion.
  24. highly recommend this place to anyone who has a passion for Italian food.
  25. ordered a full order of spinach ravioli and meat ravioli, while my friend had a full order of the gnocchi.
  26. so we decided to sit in for dinner one night and ordered up some of the best sounding and worst tasting pizza ive ever had.
  27. The food is reasonable, delicious, and the staff are great.
  28. The best Italian food in LA
  29. This place has simply the best Italian food that I've ever had.
  30. Those places have a better selection, and are very yummy, although nothing in LA is TRULY authentic.
  31. found the pie crust curiously hard and stiff (kind of like a tasteless Chicago pizza shell), but the fillings were great.
  32. The gnocci was obviously fresh and therefore impeccable- the best I've ever had.
  33. It has more of a diner feel and is not fancy, but it is good homestyle food.
  34. It comes with very nice olives, peppers, and bread.
  35. Generous portions, tasty food, casual dress, friendly staff. Warm, quaint decor.
  36. This was the first really good Italian food I've had out here in Los Angeles and I've been here 5 years.
  37. Do I dare say that the pasta sauce is the single best I have ever had.
  38. The food was OK, Gelato was great, and Service was horrible.
  39. The sauce is amazing and the pizza crust is terrific, crisp on the outside and chewy.
  40. Imagine a slice of fresh bread being smothered by a giant meatball swimming in red sauce.
  41. The food was OK, large portions of pasta (I do not like pasta), and the meat was just OK, we had our gelato to go and once we were far away from the evil waitress, the gelato was just marvelous.
  42. The most delicious tomato sauce (and great source of lycopene) in LA
  43. Claire, the original owner/chef from the original Al Gelato in Chicago's burbs, oversees the kitchen, bakes the best homemade thick bread, pickles their own olives/gardenia, makes their own sausage and meatballs, should I go on?
  44. good gelato, bad pizza
  45. Forget the Gelato and start out with a homemade bread and tuna salad sandwich that's huge.
  46. love their olive and pepper assortment that is offered with the bread.
  47. Best Gelato/Italian food since Original Italian Grandma walked the earth
  48. Someone told me it is the water, in any case, this place has food that is even sub par for LA, Icecream is good thouugh.
  49. Probably the best in LA, with quality dough, tons of cheese, plenty of meat, and good sauce.
  50. must say that their desserts( especially the tiramisu) is this side of heaven but their food is overpriced and oversauced.
  51. We believe Al Gelato offers the most authentic tasting gelato you can get here in Los Angeles.
  52. Recommend the rigatoni w/ marinara, the chicken soup w/huge pieces of chicken meat, and of course the gelato.
  53. There's a full menu of salads, pasta, pizza and sandwiches.
  54. What we will talk about today is the fact that Al Gelato not only serves the best, freshest, creamiest gelato in the United States , it also serves some of the best authentic Italian food on earth.
  55. This place is average at the best and bellow average if you are talking about Italian food and Gelato authenticity.

10 years and its still the best gelato in LA

by Sheauen

I love this place! My roommates in college introduced me to this place 10 years ago. They had spent the summer in Italy and swore up and down it was the best gelato in LA. 10 years later, I'm still on the Westside...and I still love Al Gelato. I always spend a long time in front of the case trying to decide. Today, the pumpkin gelato was my pick. They only have it during the fall and its basically pumpkin pie on a cone (or in a cup). Light, creamy, speckled with pumpkin pie spices...it basically made my Saturday afternoon. My boyfriend had the coffee crunch...and basically polished it off before we made it back across the street to the car. LOVE IT!

The owner who obviously takes great pride in his work, delivers consistently wonderful flavors and textures.

This is how Gelato is supposed to taste!
