The Scene – At the upscale end of Robertson sits a quaint Italian ice-cream parlor where a friendly waitstaff helps you indulge your sweet tooth and savory cravings. – – The Food – No matter how much commercial ice cream makers trumpet the quality of their ingredients, there is nothing like small, handmade batches of fresh, frozen cream. Gelato is denser than the average American-style ice cream, and Al Gelato's is lush, smooth and packed with flavor. Fruity selections are rich and vibrant. Chocolate-themed flavors explore the nuances of cocoa and butterfat, and the…

Editor's Tips

Parking:
If you can't find a metered spot on Robertson; try one of the side streets like Gregory Way.
Save Time:
If you don't see your favorite flavor in the front case, ask them to check the freezer in the back.
Know Before You Go:
Al Gelato only takes cash. There's an ATM at the market across the street and the closest bank is at Wilshire and Robertson.

  4. The best ice cream I have ever had and the ambiance is delightful.

dessert
83.92999649047852% positive
  1. Everything is vastly overpriced, from the sandwiches to the deserts.
  2. But it depends if you like gelato's rich texture over plain old ice cream.
  3. like chocolate hazelnut.
  4. ice cream is good, get it and eat at home so you dont have to deal with the nasty waitresses.
  5. The best ice cream I have ever had and the ambiance is delightful.
  6. The best is chocolate chip, sounds maybe a bit boring, but not here.
  7. The gelato wasn't horrible overall - if you're in the neighborhood anyway and want some dessert, I wouldn't avoid the place - but certainly not worth going out of your way for.
  8. good ice cream, gourmet prices
  9. could buy a couple of pints of Haagan Daz for the same amount, which is probably 10 times as much ice cream and just as good (if not better).
  10. Since there are tables outside I thought it would be a nice place to have some ice cream.
  11. If you feel the need to have a bit of dinner with your dessert, though, they offer a really tasty house salad.
  12. The cannoli, gelato with real whipped cream and the tiramisu were also great.
  13. Also, all the chocolate based ones are amazing.
  14. And all their desserts are outstanding.
  15. The chocolate hazelnut is wonderfully authentic.
  16. The gelato and the other desserts are outstanding.
  17. The wait staff stated they could not serve nor allow us to sit outside on the curb with our dog and enjoy our desert.
  18. Also chocolate, and hazelnut, strawberry and other fruits very good.
  19. Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles.
  20. While Al Gelato has been one of my favorite desert places for years, I must say that everytime I visit I pray the owner is not scooping gelato that day.
  21. Again, dont get me wrong, the ice cream is good, but dont expect TOO much!
  22. Good ice cream, not good everything else.
  23. found the pie crust curiously hard and stiff (kind of like a tasteless Chicago pizza shell), but the fillings were great.
  24. must say that their desserts( especially the tiramisu) is this side of heaven but their food is overpriced and oversauced.
  25. Outstanding desserts
  26. The gelato's alright because they let you choose between fresh whipped cream on top or a sample scoop of another flavor.
  27. Amazing dessert
  28. like ice cream so I don't mind dropping by for some at Al Gelato every now and then.

  1. Delicious food and great staff
  2. Fresh pasta, perfect sauce - their meatballs and chicken cutlet are a perfect companion.
  3. Everything is vastly overpriced, from the sandwiches to the deserts.
  4. Those places have a better selection, and are very yummy, although nothing in LA is TRULY authentic.
  5. The gelato's alright because they let you choose between fresh whipped cream on top or a sample scoop of another flavor.
  6. The chocolate hazelnut is wonderfully authentic.
  7. The most delicious tomato sauce (and great source of lycopene) in LA
  8. Claire, the original owner/chef from the original Al Gelato in Chicago's burbs, oversees the kitchen, bakes the best homemade thick bread, pickles their own olives/gardenia, makes their own sausage and meatballs, should I go on?
  9. highly recommend this place to anyone who has a passion for Italian food.
  10. It comes with very nice olives, peppers, and bread.
  11. usually order the meat ravioli which comes in the best marinara sauce!
  12. Probably the best in LA, with quality dough, tons of cheese, plenty of meat, and good sauce.
  13. great food
  14. The food is fairly good and they have one of the sweetest sauces I have ever had.
  15. love love love the open face meatball sandwich.
  16. Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles.
  17. What we will talk about today is the fact that Al Gelato not only serves the best, freshest, creamiest gelato in the United States , it also serves some of the best authentic Italian food on earth.
  18. The gelato and ice are tasty and rich.
  19. good gelato, bad pizza
  20. Generous portions, tasty food, casual dress, friendly staff. Warm, quaint decor.
  21. By far, Al Gelato has the best red sauce and meatballs in LA.
  22. If you feel the need to have a bit of dinner with your dessert, though, they offer a really tasty house salad.
  23. If you still have room have the meat ball before you cool off with some fabulous gelato.
  24. Truly a great find in a city starved for good Italian food.
  25. Best Gelato/Italian food since Original Italian Grandma walked the earth
  26. found the pie crust curiously hard and stiff (kind of like a tasteless Chicago pizza shell), but the fillings were great.
  27. got a small and the portion was HUGE and the soup was fantastic.
  28. This place is average at the best and bellow average if you are talking about Italian food and Gelato authenticity.
  29. This was the first really good Italian food I've had out here in Los Angeles and I've been here 5 years.
  30. ordered a full order of spinach ravioli and meat ravioli, while my friend had a full order of the gnocchi.
  31. Someone told me it is the water, in any case, this place has food that is even sub par for LA, Icecream is good thouugh.
  32. The Gelato is good, is tasty and fresh but you can get this in so many places, since they dont make their own.
  33. The food is reasonable, delicious, and the staff are great.
  34. If you desire to stuff you face and belly, go for it because the portions are very large, however the pastas and sandwiches are not good and not Italian.
  35. It has more of a diner feel and is not fancy, but it is good homestyle food.
  36. The food was OK, large portions of pasta (I do not like pasta), and the meat was just OK, we had our gelato to go and once we were far away from the evil waitress, the gelato was just marvelous.
  37. Their NY style pizza I rate one of the best in the city, a superb Pesto sauce (we had over rigatoni), and amazing garlic bread (and regular bread) made on the premises.
  38. you have to get the rigatoni (i don't like red sauce, but i love theirs!)
  39. have heard the pizza and Italian food are great as well, although we have yet to try it.
  40. The sauce is amazing and the pizza crust is terrific, crisp on the outside and chewy.
  41. so we decided to sit in for dinner one night and ordered up some of the best sounding and worst tasting pizza ive ever had.
  42. The food was OK, Gelato was great, and Service was horrible.
  43. Imagine a slice of fresh bread being smothered by a giant meatball swimming in red sauce.
  44. The gnocci was obviously fresh and therefore impeccable- the best I've ever had.
  45. Hot, baked bread with thick crunchy crust is offered with the main entrees - and not to mention the delicious olive tray.
  46. Recommend the rigatoni w/ marinara, the chicken soup w/huge pieces of chicken meat, and of course the gelato.
  47. love their olive and pepper assortment that is offered with the bread.
  48. We believe Al Gelato offers the most authentic tasting gelato you can get here in Los Angeles.
  49. Forget the Gelato and start out with a homemade bread and tuna salad sandwich that's huge.
  50. Best price, Best food, Best Italian in LA

10 years and its still the best gelato in LA

by Sheauen

I love this place! My roommates in college introduced me to this place 10 years ago. They had spent the summer in Italy and swore up and down it was the best gelato in LA. 10 years later, I'm still on the Westside...and I still love Al Gelato. I always spend a long time in front of the case trying to decide. Today, the pumpkin gelato was my pick. They only have it during the fall and its basically pumpkin pie on a cone (or in a cup). Light, creamy, speckled with pumpkin pie spices...it basically made my Saturday afternoon. My boyfriend had the coffee crunch...and basically polished it off before we made it back across the street to the car. LOVE IT!

I will be back for sure, I'm dying to check out other flavors of gelato!

And all their desserts are outstanding.

Being from Italy, my expectation towards quality Gelato are high. It was impossible for me to find truly good gelato in LA until a friend recommended "Al Gelato".

The owner who obviously takes great pride in his work, delivers consistently wonderful flavors and textures.

This is how Gelato is supposed to taste!
