What Our Expert Scouts Say

March 31, 2013

Canter's has, what seems like, an endless menu. This is a typical Jewish delicatessen, with pastries, bagels, soup, matzo brei, deli meats...and you can get it all 24/7.

Their pastrami on rye is legit. And their chicken noodle soup is exactly what you need on cold days. Also, the bar attached is a fun little place to go for a drink.

Classic LA Jewish deli. Sandwiches are solid, bakery is brimming with rugala, black and white cookies, and petite cupcakes. Fun late night.

This is where you go late night for Matzoh Ball Soup, retired waitresses, and quite possibly among the greatest people watching spots in all of LA! If you stroll in after 1am, you're sure to be entertained.

Legendary Fairfax neighborhood Jewish diner has served pastrami on rye and mishmash soup to rock stars and high schoolers alike (although at different hours) for generations.

Canters. The food is unbelieveably bland, the atmosphere is great if you're looking for smarmy.

I AGREE WITH THE NEGATIVES. WELL FOR SUCH A FAMOUS PLACE, THEY DONT SEEM TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT MAINTAINING THIER FAME.

NICE OLD SCHOOL RESTAURANT LAYOUT, FOOD QUALITY FOR THE PRICE? GO TO NORMS.

MY FRIEND HAD A HAM SANDWICH THAT LOOKED LIKE IT CAME OUT OF THE PLASTIC PACKAGE AT 711,

AND I HAD A $12.00 CHEFS SALAD, THAT WAS NOTHING LESS THAN PATHETIC, IVE HAD BETTER SALADS AT MCDONALDS(NO JOKE).

LOTS OF EMPLOYEES, NONE SEEMED TOO CONCERNED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THIER TIPS.

TOO BAD THAT SUCH A FAMOUS PLACE CANT LIVE UP TO ITS FAME.

COULD BE GOOD IF ANYBODY GAVE A DAM, BUT IT WAS APPARENT THAT NOBODY DOES.

JUST MILKING THE FAME FOR ALL ITS WORTH,

If you go to Canter's for a Ham Sandwich or a Chef Salad, you're in the wrong place. Every restaurant has items it's famous for and does well. THOSE are the items you should try. I recommend you try the Matzo ball soup or the corned beef sandwich or even knishes. I recommend the rugalach. They're excellent, especially the raspberry ones. If I was looking for a chef salad, I'd probably go to McD's before Canter's. But I'm not going to find great corned beef or pastries at McD's.

Canter's Hits the Spot. I was just here again recently with me buds I haven't seen in a long while. For a late night spot, it's a good pick. Sure, the food isn't all that great. But, I always have had good service here and stepping into the place is like stepping into a time machine. Sometimes, I'll come here just to sit and have coffee myself. They never try to rush me out which is good!

This is the best deli in America.. Canter's sandwiches cannot be beaten. Period. And the pickles, which are brought out to you on a huge plate at the start of your meal, are to die for. I recommend buying a jar to take out with you. Don't forget the black and white cookie, either.

I love Canter's--the ultimate L.A. experience. I love, love, love Canter's and consider it a highlight to visit. Always have, always will. Food's great, reasonably priced, and a visit is a Los Angeles experience, full of color and mood. Never had anything bad here, ever.

Need some attitude?. I wish there was a minus star option for rating. I took my colleagues there while remembering warm Mazza bowl soup, which my friend's mom used make for us. Well, my good memories were shattered when I was yelled at by a rude woman in cashier for not calculating my portion of the bill excluding tip before hand. The server did not ask us if we wanted separate checks, which we needed it in order to pay mixed cash and/or credit cards for out party. She threw parking stamp over the counter and gave all kinds of attitude. The food was over priced for the portion and taste. Evidentially, the extra money the food cost us bought us extra attitude!!! Please go there if you want to waste your hard earned money in most disrespectable way.

Don't bother with Canter's.. I gave Canter's a one star rating because the rating system won't let me give negative stars.

Today was my first visit to Canter's and I will never, EVER, be returning. The service was absolutely the worst I've had, and believe me I've had my share. To have to put up with unnecessary rudeness for mediocre food is just silly. Do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. You'll be ever so glad that you did.

Great deli. Canter's rivals any deli in NYC ... and may be even better than some! We went on Frommer's recommendation and weren't disappointed.

Extensive menu. 24/7 food availability; reduced hours for full bar service.

Excellent value for the price, as all lunch and dinner entrees include an appetizer (or soup), potato, vegetable, bread and dessert (ice cream or sherbet). Selections ranged from $12 (spaghetti) to $17 (salmon), with almost everything imaginable in between. The wide variety of breakfast offerings have enormous portions and are also reasonably priced. The potato pancakes shine! Only the fish platters seem relatively expensive ($20-ish), but the quality is exceptional and the pricing competitive with other delis and/or sushi places.

The bakery and deli counter offer great items to go: sky-high pies, crisp/chewy bagels and oversized pastry, as well as tender meats and tasty salads and sides by the pound. If chopped liver is your thing, Canter's is great. If not, be sure to try the tuna salad, sliced brisket, or matzo ball soup.

Wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu and eager to make your dining experience a good one. The somewhat too-dark decor is totally 60s, with padded vinyl booths and framed newspaper clippings about Canter's history. Parking is available in the small lot or in metered spaces along Fairfax.

With so many options, you're certain to leave full and happy.
