I recently went to a small cafe called Komodo near Pico and Robertson (that may not mean much to most of you, but Los Angelinos recognize this as a nice area). It initially began as a food truck (I'm not sure why food trucks became a trend, but I'm fine with it), then blossomed into what I found the other day…

I'm still in shock as to how I had never heard of either the food truck or the cafe, since they've been around for a while. To put it bluntly, this place is great. I was skeptical at first, since Asian-fusion is an overdone concept, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were making bold combinations that few were daring to make.

Asian-fusion restaurants typically have some sort of "miso glazed cod". Don't get me wrong, it's a good dish when done properly, but it's so easy to find that there's no point in going out of your way for it. Since I was skeptical at first, I played it safe and ordered the "MP3", which is sirloin with seared quail eggs, potatoes, and garlic aioli. The interesting thing about their menu is, they give you the option to order dishes as part of a taco, burrito, or rice bowl. Again, playing it safe, I went for a rice bowl.

When I got my food, I was quite happy with the result! The beef wasn't overcooked, despite being small chunks, nor was the quail egg (something I've yet to learn to cook right). The potatoes were crunchy, which added a nice texture to the mix, and the garlic aioli was powerful enough to be a solid component of the dish without overwhelming any of the other flavors. And the rice was, well, rice. All in all, I was quite pleased with my meal!

Oddly enough, I think the real winners were the drinks. They offered citrus mango juice, lychee lemonade, and passion fruit green tea. The citrus mango juice and lychee lemonade were tasty, but I'm a sucker for passion fruit green tea (which was possibly the best passion fruit green tea I've ever had, even as a boba/bubble tea connoisseur).

If you're ever in the L.A. area, this is definitely a place to try; the food is a great bang for your buck.
