In Short
Decorated in a dark, Tudor-styled motif with stained-glass windows and Oktoberfest-themed decor, this bar is a little bit of Bavaria in L.A. Head to the main room downstairs if you're looking for a mellow, German atmosphere. A little too mellow? Go upstairs for a merrier vibe. Walk into the beer garden in a bad mood and the friendly service and atmosphere is guaranteed to turn your mood festive.

The RL Tavern is the kind of place that you walk into, get the crappiest servcie you can possibly imagine, and yet still walk out (sometimes stumble out) having the greatest time of your life. The beers are awesome, the Jager is cold and the food is great. I go there for my birthday every year and every year I have the time of my life. It does tend to get crowded during the weekend but what fun would a dead bar be? Prost!

My wife and I went for lunch during mid-week at the Red Lion Tavern. Being German and living in L.A. for the past 40 years, I have come to know the German Restaurants and German Clubs. When you walk into the dimly lit room one equates the feeling of being in a dark bar. A German or Austrian Gasthaus is bright and cheery. As one walks up the stairs to the second floor, you enter a patio area with a bar that could use some sprucing up. The concrete floor slopes at an angle so much that the tables and chairs are uneven. The rest of the decor on the walls and bar is sub par, and borders on the cheap. I am all for a restaurant to use an aged look motive, but here it looks out of place. As far as the look of the downstairs room is concerned, I could not make anything out, since it was so dark. The food and service was OK. Since smoking is allowed in the patio area, it is somewhat annoying for none smokers. If you like a good beer, this is the place to try out the EXCELLENT draft beers. You won't be disappointed, even if the beers are a little pricey. Although we eat out at least six times a week, I don't think we would return any time soon to eat at the Red Lion Tavern. The Funky look is not for us.
