Editorial Review for Oaks At Ojai – by Susan Blue

The Scene
A lodge-like lobby with floral couches and wood paneling sets the tone for this low-key getaway, a counterpoint to the more famous and luxurious destination spas in the area. The building is full of activity and isn't particularly peaceful; patrons in workout clothes bustle throughout the complex, and loud talking and music from the exercise classes can be overheard in the whirlpool area and some treatment rooms.

The Services
Signature services include hot stone massage, nutrition counseling and guided hikes. Most guests also spend the night at the Oaks (two-night minimum), hoping to shed a few pounds with the spa-provided meals and exercise classes. Those who would like to treat themselves just for the day can purchase a pass or a package.

The Details
Whirlpool (co-ed in evenings), steam room (co-ed in evenings), dry sauna (co-ed in evenings), exercise equipment, Pilates, fitness classes, yoga. Massage, body treatments, watsu, Reiki, acupuncture, facials, hair removal, manicure/pedicure, full-service salon.

Insider Tips

Look Good

The "sanctuary," which includes the locker room, whirlpool, sauna and steam room is co-ed from 7pm-10:30pm. Swimsuit required during all hours.

The Extras

Take your own robe and slippers ... and be brave enough to wear them; most patrons walk around in exercise clothes, and the treatment room waiting area doubles as the hotel lobby.

Overall, its not a bad place- but it's not Great. I visited with my girlfriends and was displease with the staff and policy of the oaks. First, we were informed that we had to provide our own robes and slippers. Then we found out that if you are booking only one service you have to book that morning because overnight guest have preference. They also told us that if we were not booking the "day of pampering" spa package, we were not allowed to use the facilities. One of us was only getting a message, so they expected her to wait in the lobby for us all day until her appointment. The staff claimed it was a "liability" issue. After pleading they allowed her to use the pool, but did not offer her a locker for her clothes. If you expected a certain level of luxury don't go here.

Pros: Inexpensive, Skill, Food

Cons: Decor, Staff , No robes or slippers
