Editorial Review for Mercer Hotel – by Gayot.com
The Scene
Housed in a splendid Romanesque Revival building, this hotel has the kind of minimalist interior that causes the non-hip to wonder if the place is still under construction. It's a favorite celebrity playground, competing perhaps only with the Soho and Tribeca Grands to draw in a fashionable Hollywood-esque clientele, along with their paparazzi.
The Details
There are only 75 rooms, some with fireplaces, and the most desirable overlook the courtyard. Natural fibers, warm woods and, in many rooms, leather banquettes set the tone. The look is pristine and modern, but certainly not minimal when it comes to amenities. You'll find three dual-line phones, plus portable TV/VCR/CD players, safes and other typical upscale conveniences. Guests can relax--or pose--in the library, the lobby that doubles as a lounge, the bar or the highly rated below-ground restaurant, Mercer Kitchen, owned by local celeb chef Jean-Georges Vongrichten.

The Mercer Hotel is in a great location and a great building. My compliments end there. The price of the place is insane and some members of the hotel's staff think they are God's gift to humanity. They are rude, arrogant and unsmiling. Why? I've stayed in so many great hotels that are made great by the service. This one lives off its location, facility, and high-visibility clients. Why anyone would ever return to this place eludes me. It is like eating at a high-priced restaurant where the food is no good, but the ambiance is nice. If a luxury hotel comes with great sheets but rude service, what good is it? Really, unless rude people make you feel self-important, look for an alternative hotel that comes with a smile.
Pros: I love SOHO and this is at the heart of SOHO. The lobby is very nice to sit in.
Cons: Worst 'luxury hotel' service ever. Even the general manager is all too self-important.

I loved my experience here! Great! My only complaint would be the size of the rooms in comparison to the price. Overall, my experience was great and I love the Soho shopping!
Pros: Location
Cons: Small Rooms
