Never go! – I am a newly-wed and I wanted to try this restaurant for our anniversary. I never even got to ordering. Their attitude was too awful! We were the only ones in the restaurant and they head waiter would not allow us to sit next to each other because that would take up more room. Then he reconsidered and told us we could but only if we were out within an hour and a half. I don't know who they think they are but for their prices I should have been able to sit next to my new husband. We left and went to Yamashiro's, by far much better service. Maybe thats why they have been in business over 80 years!
Ask how much !! – I love Pace and have eaten here many times over the years. Its quirky romantic ambiance, good food and service is always a draw. However, I finally had a meal there that was just so-so, and it was a $45 entree !! It was one of the specials and so not on the menu, but since the prices there are generally in the reasonable 20-something range I felt okay just ordering it without asking the price. It was a sliced filet mignon which I ordered medium rare. The flavor was excellent, but it was a little overcooked for my taste because it was sliced prior to grilling. Also, it wasn't trimmed as I would have prepared it and had a lot of fat and gristle around the edges which, because it's so dark in there, I couldn't really see. After a few bouncy blecky bites-full I decided to take it home and sort through it in my kitchen where I could see it. (it wasn't much better in the light; I gave most of it to my very appreciative dog!) While the salmon on the menu (a favorite!) was $26, and the lamb shank is $27, I didn't expect the filet to be $45 and I think the server kind of has a responsibility to offer that up if it's so far out of range. In fairness, the ribeye on the menu is $40, and I didn't ask, but I still left feeling somewhat duped. Perhaps if it were an excellent piece of perfectly cooked meat I may have felt differently !! Otherwise, as always, a wonderful experience.
Third time not a charm! – My date wanted to go to Pace so instead of mentioning my previous bad experiences I said sure. We were seated right away, ordered water and waited and waited. Our server finally came and asked us if we were ready and we ordered a bottle of wine and said we would order our food in a minute. 20 mins later she took our order (and brought us real red wine glasses that we requested, the one's they have on the tables are unbearable). We both ordered the filet special (medium) and not that long after got our food. My steak was rare and my date's was med-rare. I sent mine back and was not chancing another adventure with the saute guy in the kitchen. My date was great, ambience decent but the food disapointed me yet again. I won't be back. Oh, the steak had applesauce on it....
BEWARE!!!: Not Worth the Price – I am giving Pace 2 stars for 2 reasons. One - this place is WAY WAY overpriced for the quality and presentation on the food. Two - The service is very fast in a "can you please eat and move on sort of way." Our server was very nice and the atmosphere is lovely, but overall there are better places to go in LA for the price.
Good food, cool atmosphere, really pricey – I like Pace. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate. It is a great spot for a nice date. However, it is a little pricey (scratch that, it is really pricey). So expect to spend a little.
No Soup for us I guess............ – I've never had a reservation cancelled on me last minute by the actual restaurant but I guess there's always a 1st for everything.
Be aware that should you have a party of 6 between the hours of 7:30 pm and 9:00pm you are not welcomed at Pace'.
Made my reservations online at OpentableDOTcom for 8pm with no issue I get a call at 3pm telling me no groups between 7:30 and 9pm.
I have in laws flying in from the east coast at 5pm anything later would be midnight for these poor folks.
Again ..........I have never been cancelled on before.
Thumbs down to pace
what happened to good ol' Pace – I used to go here for dinner all the time with fellow Laurel Canyon friends and now I drive by on my way home each day and feel saddened by the changed Pace. The prices have SKY ROCKETED. Shame on the establishment for once catering to a cool unique crowd and now charging a crazy place for a simple piece of salmon and salty pizza. I prefer to take the hill down to a place where I dont shake my head at a disgustingly overpriced reciepts and feel excited by changing menu's and a dinner worth while. What happened?
Good, but not worth the price – Wow. Went to Pace last night for dinner, and while it was good, as it has been in the past, it is absolutely not worth the price. We brought our own bottle of wine, expecting a corkage fee, but $30?!? I'm sorry, but how do they justify that? My husband had the night's special pasta - which was also $30. $30 for a small plate of pasta? As previous commentators have mentioned too, $3.75 for one cup of decaf coffee. I like the food and the atmosphere, but who do they think they are? For a casual Wednesday dinner for two (even bringing our own wine) the bill came to over $150. No thanks. Won't be going back any time soon.
Good food, horrible reservations and attitude – I've been here twice, and the food it always great. HOWEVER, the place is always way too packed...I think they must have a fire marshall on the payroll to get away with this crowding. What made our experience so TERRIBLE was that we had a reservation made a day in advance when we called to confirm a few hours prior to our seating. They told us we couldn't be seated for at least another half an hour and to come in at 9:30PM. We arrived at 9:25, and they said they were off track because of traffic (?) and we should wait outside. We didn't get seated until 10PM and then only in the outside area where a breeze blew through the plastic covering and made for a pretty unpleasant meal. Yes, it may have a good name, location and food, but service like this is going to ruin it eventually. I hope they get their act together.
Horrible Business Policies – We ordered from Pace from their on-line menu. The price of the chicken entree was $17.00 on-line and when the bill came it was $23.00. The manager refused to honor the price on the website and just said "they have to update it". We also ordered the pasta special which had truffles added, but they neglected to tell us that it was $45.00!!! This restaurant is a rip-off.
