In Short – This casual, traditionally decorated restaurant is a no-frills hideaway for those seeking the flavors of North India. The menu features classic fare such as chicken tandoori, naan loaded with toasted garlic bits and mango chutney. The cool and international clientele comes for the house specialties, like ginger chicken swathed in a spicy-sweet paste, and coconut curry with vegetables in a thick sauce.

So sad that many people were having bad experiences with service! I hate to say it, but most indian restaurants I go to seem to have a stuck up waiting staff. I don't know why that is. The service wasn't too bad. The staff was attentive and refilled our water when needed. But I did find a eyelash in my rice. GROSS. I don't know why it is, and hate generalizing, but I do find trouble with hygene sanitary conditions when dealing with the indian culture as well. I love indian food and all cultures, but I feel safer cooking indian food at home just to be on the safe side:( sad. some rest. need order and with indian experiences that Ive had I would feel safer eating at an Indian chain if they had one. And no I don't mean flavor of Indian that's not a chain. I mean a big corporate put you in order follow sanitary guideline chain

Worst. Service. Ever.

by LAFoodFan at Citysearch

It pains me to say this because I have loved Gate of India's food for years, but it cannot be denied: the service here is the worst service I have ever had dining in Los Angeles. I recently brought several friends here for lunch and our waiter barely acknowledged our presence. We had to ask multiple time for silverware when our salad course arrived, which he finally brought out to us...two sets at a time. Is it really so hard to carry four sets of silverware in one trip? After the salad course our forks were taken away, and we had to ask several times for new ones...which NEVER came. We finally lifted them off of other tables. Our drink refill requests went almost completely ignored, and our bill NEVER came...though another employee (not our waiter) leapt to the register to ring us up when he saw us heading to the door. I'm normally a generous tipper, but after the atrocious service we had it was a struggle to leave a mere 8% tip...which was, upon reflection, too much. The restaurant grade here has gone from B to A and is now back to B, so who the heck knows what is going on with this restaurant. My sincere advice: call in your order TO GO and take it home to enjoy. You'll get all the pleasures of their delicious cuisine without having to endure, much less tip, the worst waiters in L.A.

SLOW service, RUDE Waiter

by jenr123 at Citysearch

My fiance and I decided to try this place for lunch today. We arrived at 2:30 just in time for the lunch special. We were greeted by a grumpy host who took us to a booth without place settings. He never brought them - we had to walk over and ask when our salads came. There were only 3 diners in the restaurant at the time, so it was not busy. The couple behind us ordered about 5 minutes before we did, and they ordered the exact same thing as us: Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikki Masala. The difference is, they got their entrees in about 15 minutes, and we waited 55 minutes. We were just about to walk out when rude Indian waiter brought our food. The galling thing was, we watched him serve entrees to two different couples who had come in 30 minutes after us. After we had been waiting for 20 minutes, I asked if I could change my order to white meat. Rude Indian Waiter gave me a dirty look and said, "It's too late." Then we waited another 35 minutes. He never came to check on us, to tell us what was taking so long, or anything. When it FINALLY arrived, the food itself was good, except I detest dark meat, so I just ate rice, naan and Korma sauce. My fiance and I both noticed Rude Indian Waiter's demeanor change as it was time to get the check and box the food. He suddenly became kinder and more efficient. Needless to say, I won't be back. There are other places in LA with great Indian food that treat customers better.

  • Pros: food is good
  • Cons: waiter was rude, inattentive. Food took an hour to come out.
