Classic Indian food in a tranquil Hollywood setting.. In Short
This pretty, pink-lit room on the quiet end of Melrose is a poular place to enjoy a quiet, unpretentious meal with friends. Even when many of the tables are full, the noise level stays low, and the hanging chandeliers add atmosphere. Entrees include aloo gobi, a mixture of potatoes and tender cauliflower, and fish tikka masala, marinated in yogurt, and then cooked in a sweet stew. The ubiquitous chicken tandoori is tender and smoky.

Choose someplace else.... Not sure how this place stays in business with all the other GOOD Indian restaurants in the area. We went to this place two times, hoping that the first time was just an off-night, but the second time was even more disappointing. The dishes are mediocre and lack flavor. Anarkali is a much better choice if you're looking for an Indian restraunt off La Brea and Melrose.

For Indian Food Lovers. I became a citysearch member just to write about how much I enjoyed this place. Great service, great selection of food, including Indian breads, beers, and dishes I hadn't seen outside of India, much less at other restaurants. Even got dessert on the house. Highly recommended!

Blah..... I have only done take out from Mumtaz -- perhaps the sit in meals are significantly different. I was really disappointed -- especially after reading the other positive reviews here. The sauces and curries were very watered down. The papadum (sp?) was also extraordinarily bland. The vegetarian samosa was probably the best thing I had -- and it was slightly below average. I ordered the rice pudding for desert -- I couldn't stomach more than a few bites of it. $35 for two people to have a very forgettable meal.

The dippin is slippin. Seriously, the sauces there are not as strong as other Indian joints. First off the spicy sauce is not offered. You have to ask first. They sweet sauce is not that tangy. The grilled chicken was okay, but the Tandori chicken rocked. I'm not saying shi place is terrible, but not great.
