Ambience. Went to Frankie's last night and it was like I was transported back to 1950s New York. Sinatra and Dean playing, waiters dressed in black, amazing food & wine list. Had the Wild Atlantic Salmon (not on the menu ask for the specials) with a bottle of Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc & was so happy. My Girlfriend had the Spaghetti & Meatballs (which I tried) & the made from scratch meatballs are the best in town without a doubt. After dinner we had a canoli and a tiramisu both good, the canoli better than the tiramisu. All in all a great experience and recommended thoroughly. I'll be back...often.
I agree with food fan that the watered down drinks are too expensive, but not that the food makes up for it. Why do I get the feeling that most of the positive reviews were posted by the owner. Seems when someone has something negative to say someone else comes back to put them and their reviews down. Hey Frankie, spend less time on the Internet and more time in your restaurant. On second though maybe a little less Frankie would be better for the joint.
Bottom line, greasy mediocre Italian is so out regardless of what music they play.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!!. Last night was my girlfriend's birthday & we were looking for a place to eat after shopping all day on Melrose. We walked by Franky's and heard the Shins playing. THE SHINS!! at an Italian joint? We had to go in. So we did and it was like I left Melrose and entered Silverlake. It was a bunch of hipster kids (20 and 30 somethings) feeling the vibe, drinking and eating, enjoying conversation. We ate great food, drank a bottle of Gavi di Gavi and enjoyed the night. Marina, our waitress, (who was amazing) told us Sundays they play a different kind of music & it attracts a younger crowd. What a pleasurable experience, you've made a fan out of me.
Great food!!. I've been to Frankie's on more than one occasion. First the cons: While the food price's were great, drink prices are a little high ($9 for a jack & coke). It seems like I hear the same songs over and over again when I go as well, like a 30 song Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin loop. I understand the need for old music with all the old people that go to Frankie's, but mix in some Jazz or doo-wop, New York style eating is more than listening to dead crooners. Now the pros: I had the Salmon and it was perfect. My wife had the White Fish and loved it. I have been there for lunch & have been to La La's and La la's is exactly what you pay for cheap food and cheap prices. This is not a knock on La La's but you can't compare the two. If Melrose is "not exactly the cream of society" then why is it that you are taking a date there? Secondly, La La's NEVER has a wait. They have park benches for Christ's sake!! Third since when is a restaurant characterized by how often celebrities eat there. I've been there when the aforementioned celebrities are there and I've been when there are none. If you are going out to eat to seek out celebrities then get a funny hat & a camera and act like the tourist you are. I have had drinks at the bar when Adam works and when Matt works and they are both great. Adam is more apt to start a conversation & get to know you, where Matt won't engage in conversation unless I start talking to him, he's not rude just quiet, almost like he doesn't want to impose. I recommend Frankie's for the food, for Frankie who talks to every table & for the ambiance. Are there better places in L.A.? Yes, but Frankie's is pretty amazing.
Not Recommended!. Frankies is a small Italian restaurant on the east end of the Melrose Ave strip between La Bra and Fairfax. For those of you that don?t know, Melrose gets a lot of foot traffic during the day on weekend, mostly window shoppers, (think Venice Beach without the fresh air) not exactly the cream of society but it?s become a happening. I had lunch at Frankies last week while on a date. My plan was to go to Lala?s aross the street but the place had a forty five minute wait so my date and I decided to walk across the street to Frankies where there was no wait. (there never is) The restaurant was dark, dingy with only two other tables with customers. No soprano?s stars, no Chief Bratton, no James Woods, just a few others who didn?t want to wait in line somewhere else. Talking with my waiter he pointed out that at one time the restaurant catered to a much different clientele, and some big names were dropped. I got the idea that the servers would rather not be working with this Melrose crowd at all. The food tasted fine but nothing special, and I had a bad case of heartburn the rest of the day. As I said the place gave me the feeling of a dying business. With so many good restaurants to hoose from there really is no reason to go back.
Like Home. I came from Boston to the glitter of L.A. searching for something that made me feel at home. Frankie's is such a place. Frankie goes to every table, introduces himself and is very attentive. I sat at the bar where I chatted up a fellow Bostonian (Matty) who was knowledgeable about the important things (Sports, movies and especially music). It was a busy Friday, but that didn't stop Matty from being attentive. I ate the Shrimp Teresa which was phenomenal. If you're looking for a place to help you with the latest L.A. diet craze then this isn't the place for you, but if you want good food, stiff drinks and great service then Frankie's is your place. The only thing that bugged me was the cliche Frank Sinatra music played over the in house speakers. Contemporary music like: Ryan Adams, Jackie Greene or something in that vein would probably attract a younger crowd and make the place a little more hip.
Frankies - quite frankly - is the best!.

I stumbled upon this place quite by accident for a business lunch and was so blown away with my tasty meal I vowed to come back again for dinner. Well I want to tell you -- and boy am I going to -- this place blew me away again with another savory and tantalizing meal. My entree along with my boyfriend's were stellar.
We were fortunate to have met Franky who makes you feel as if you are a guest in his home. His genuinely warm and upbeat personality add to the character of this fine Italian restaurant. Additionally, our waitress Marina did a wonderful job in recommending our dishes, oh, and her smile lit the room as well. Many thanks to the folks at Frankies.
Tried Frankies based on the 4 ? star rating here but I was sorely disappointed. Good news was that it was mostly empty and we got a table right away, bad news was the food. Sauce was runny and the veal was chewy. I didn?t get the feeling that complaining would help. Not sure what my waiters name was as I didn?t see him enough. I also didn?t get much more than a hello from the short stocky guy who I think was Frankie let alone a Sambucca.
Maybe Bratton and Woods like the place maybe they don?t, but I will steer clear and will recommend the same.
authentic ny italian food. You wont find this kind of italian food anywhere in la. if you want ny authentic food, this is the place to go. you can smell the sauce as soon as you walk in the door. you are always treated like family. it surprised me to read tarpmans review. the lousy tables cant be that bad, i was there not too long ago and saw james woods and chief bratton sitting at the big round wooden one. i assume if dining at frankies is good enough for them, it should be good enough for someone of your kind tarpman. maybe its your bad attitude that always gets you a bad experience. perhaps olive garden in more your speed.
Reminds me of home..... I came on the recommendation of some friends. I am a native from NY and have been here for nearly 20 years. When people tell me to go to an Italian restaurant, i am sometimes hesitant. There is no food in LA like NY! When I walked into Frankies, I was greeted by Frankie himself, and with a kiss on the cheek! He brought me and my the rest of my party of 4 to a big round booth. Although the restaurant is small, it makes it feel so cozy. We ordered one cold antipast and a hot antipast. The baked clams are to die for! I ordered the Ciopinno- it was DYNAMITE. My friends ordered chicken parm, veal parm and a rib eye. Our server was attentive and very sweet, i believe his name was Dan. Frankie came over with Sambucca at the end our meal and did an italian toast i am used to. He really made us feel like family! I felt very much like I was back home.
