The Scene
The Spike has a somewhat lurid history, thanks to an after-hours scene that could politely be called "colorful." After a lengthy remodeling, the bar has been cleaned up and turned into a nice neighborhood nightspot. Updated decor includes an abstract blue-and-black pattern repeated throughout the club, fresh-cut flowers in vases, a black-lacquered bar, a raised DJ booth and a spotless mirrored dance floor. Overall, it has the same retro-elegant polish of East Village drag-queen hangouts like Pyramid or Jackie 60.
The Draw
The club has morphed into a cool drinking and dancing spot that's well worth a visit, and the staff is wonderfully attentive. The music typically consists of house blends, but some themed nights cater to straights with a rock-goth mindset. On gay nights, the crowd is a mix of WeHo and Silver Lake types.
