Excellent food and service.. After living in the mid-west for 7 years, it was hard find a place with good soul food. After being here, I will never go without again. First time I went, my date and I had the lunch specials on a Saturday. They give you plenty of food for the price and everything was delicious. She had the chicken, cause she is a chickenhawk, and it was very tasty. I had the meatloaf, which was also very good. I would say the side dishes were excellent, especailly the greens. The second time we went, of course she got the chicken for the reasons I stated before. This time I got the fish and chips, which was alot for food for the price. I got a whole fillet of snapper fried, fries and a salad. Overall the food is great here, the ambience makes you feel at home, and the service is top notch.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Opened in 1965, this homey roadside eatery is where folks go for deep fried, smothered-in-sauce, no-calorie-counting comfort food. Wood paneling surrounds the dark wood tables and wall menu that lists what the regulars keep coming in for: fried chicken, oxtail, short ribs, braised beef and vegetable sides like sweet potatoes, collard greens and mac and cheese. The gumbo, generously doled out in portions big enough for two, is served only on weekends.

REALLY good collard greens and macaroni and cheese. I'm always hungry for soul food, and it's usually hard for me to find a place that satisfies the way real down south home-cooking usually does. Bertha's did not disappoint. I don't know WHAT they season their pork chops with, but I love it. The collard greens, which are my favorite, had just enough vinegar in them for that tangy factor and the macaroni was very filling. All in all, when I finished my plate (meaning ate as much as I could and put the rest in the fridge for the next day) I was ready for a good nap.
