Editorial Review for Bertha's Soul Food Cafe – by Mar Yvette

In Short
First opened in 1965, this homey roadside eatery is where folks go for deep fried, smothered-in-sauce, no-calorie-counting comfort food. Wood paneling surrounds the dark wood tables and wall menu that lists what the regulars keep coming in for: fried chicken, oxtails, short ribs, braised beef and vegetable sides like sweet potatoes, collard greens and mac and cheese. The gumbo, generously doled out in portions big enough for two, is served only on weekends.

I'm always hungry for soul food, and it's usually hard for me to find a place that satisfies the way real down south home-cooking usually does. Bertha's did not disappoint. I don't know WHAT they season their pork chops with, but I love it. The collard greens, which are my favorite, had just enough vinegar in them for that tangy factor and the macaroni was very filling. All in all, when I finished my plate (meaning ate as much as I could and put the rest in the fridge for the next day) I was ready for a good nap.
