What Our Expert Scouts Say

Joan's On Third
May 06, 2013

They have an excellent selection of cheese and the most helpful staff. This little place is a ton of things wrapped up in one, bakery, lunch, to-go items, cheese counter, gourmet market/grocery.

One of my favorite lunch spots, as well as all of LA. Always busy, but their food is oh so good it's worth the wait. Love the meatloaf sandwich. Make sure you get sweets as well.

Joan's is always packed. You can pick up a few favorite splurge items in the "market" and then have lunch. Their salads are all very good.

Restaurant, deli, bakery, and gourmet market all in one. Always bustling and consistently good. It's a salads, sandwiches and sweet treats kind of place.

The Dean and Deluca of Los Angeles. Great place to get pre-packaged treats for holiday parties, or holiday office presents.

The Dean and Deluca of Los Angeles. Beautiful sweet treats, a wide array of cheeses and hot food in the cases. The perfect place for an LA lunch or to buy a pretty gift basket.

Perfect shop to stock up for a gourmet picnic!. Joan?s on Third is about as close as L.A. gets to New York?s famed Dean & Deluca ? but on a more minute scale. What began as a small catering company has since expanded to include a marketplace and cafe. The gourmet food shop feels feminine, which may come as no surprise considering it?s run by a mother and her two daughters. Cows are a recurring theme throughout the space and on the walls. Who wouldn?t want to pay homage to the cute four-legged animals responsible for my camembert?

The shop has earned a reputation for its delicious breakfasts, tasty sandwiches, and savory desserts ? but Joan?s is also a nifty place to stock up on ingredients for your own creations. In their marketplace, the deli showcases cheeses, charcuterie, pates, olives, and spreads almost too beautiful to eat. The refrigerated cases offer gourmet pre-prepared entrees and side dishes ? take these home or pack them up for a perfect picnic. Even grab a bottle of wine from the shelf against the wall or some fig spread and breadsticks off the front table.

Of course, you may not be able to help stopping by the dessert station, featuring home-made gelato, cupcakes, cookies, and tarts.

Thank You, Joan!. Is there anything that Joan’s on Third can’t do? Not as far as my tastebuds are aware. Their famous cupcakes are just another delicious edible that this store whips up. They make traditional-looking cupcakes in classic flavors like vanilla with chocolate frosting which are very good. Their Chocolate Coconut is probably their most popular, but if you're looking to try something a little different, you must have their Marshmallow Cloud Cupcake dipped in chocolate. When you see this cupcake that towers above all others, you'll understand where the name comes from. It has the perfect amount of moisture and the flavor is refreshingly unique.

Always Delivers the Best. Since Joan's prepares their soups daily, depending on the day you go, you can enjoy either vegetable, asparagus, lentil, or my favorite, roasted corn soup. If it's a rainy day and you want to enjoy your soup at home, no worries. Get your order made for pickup!

Glorified deli.. Joan's on Third. I get it. They have pre made food, they sell cupcakes, they have a faux deli. Here's what I don't. Y'all do know this is a glorified Ralph's right? As I was looking at the food in the glass case, I was thinking...Ohh. Grilled veggies, steak, chicken, looks colorful but by God. How long has this been sitting here? Using ceramic white stylish platters does not take away from the fact that IT'S FOOD IN A GLASS CASE.

But I digress.

Here's where I think they should really take a cue from IKEA. We're from LA. We're not that bright. Arrows on the floor or some sort of indication of order would be nice. This was like a yuppie warzone.

After much confusion, we skim the menu and he decided to go with a caesar salad and I with a 'pressed chicken, bacon, and brie' sandwich and two ice teas.

"That will be 35 dollars"

Are you serious. Whatevs. We take our number and seat ourselves outside on a rinky dink table. Nice. It's like a french bistro but not. Our iced teas came and it was in a plastic takeout cup. Classy. Refills anyone? No? OK. Our food came shortly after which we had to wait to eat because we didn't have any utensils.

After a couple bites of my thin, weak looking sandwich and his salad, my mind starts to spin out of control, "Where is the chicken? This is a glorified panini. You want to charge 12 bucks but don't give me a side. Some potato chips? No? Ok. Wow. I want to burn this place down. Oh. They use the same unseasoned chicken chunks that's in his caesar salad which is coincidentally making him yak right now. Btw. Why is his basic salad 15 bucks and why is it flavorless. Why do I feel like I'm going insane?"

Twilight zone I tell ya.

But in truth, I get it. You sell your food on fancy plates, lay down some black and white tile, throw in some celebs, map your store out so that it creates a frenzy, stock some imported cheese and pass off like a French market.

It's cool I get it. You're not a stripper, You're a 'go go dancer'.

The 'Hoff goes there! 'Nuff said.. We had lunch catered from Joan's on Third, and it was amazingly fresh. I enjoyed the caprese sandwich, but the highlight was the crazy dessert known as the MAGIC BAR (yes, its mightiness deserves all caps).

The MAGIC BAR is a concoction of caramelized, pecan-ed, chocolate-y goodness. Imagine a rich, decadant, ooey, gooey chocolate chip cookie smashed together with a bunch of savory yet sweet tastes. It was one part brownie, one part pecan brittle and all parts awesome.

I must also note that the one time I've frequented the actual Joan's on Third, the one and only "I'm huge in Germany!" himself, David Hasselhoff , was there. And yes, person with the black Saab, you were blocking his car.

Take out service and counter staff don't match the food. Today proved the second of two take out order fiascoes. Last year at this time we arrived at the stipulated pick-up time to find a closed sign on the door. Persistent banging on the door produced no result and only after retreating to the back door did a staff member appear. The lasagna was there as ordered, but they could not produce the bread.

Went to to pick up an order today and only after more than 30 minutes of various staff searching for the order and coming up with clearly manufactured excuses , and doing so with plenty of attitude, did someone admit they did not have the lasagna as ordered. Further discussion, again with attitude on the part of the staff ensued and finally a fellow named Victor appeared and said they would make and deliver the proper order.

Called after the first incident asking to speak to the owner or manager, but never got a return call. The mistake was ordering again. Good lasagna, but unreliable take out service and a staff lacking courtesy.

Sandwiches Taste Like Paper. I've had the food at this place a number of times, and if it weren't for the company paying for it that number would be 1. The sandwiches taste like paper. Not that I know what paper tastes like, I am just trying to imagine what would taste as bland. Instead of paying way too much money for a sandwich here, just drink a bunch of water to get full and imagine yourself eating a sandwich while chomping your jaw. It should have the same effect.

The only reason I give it 2 stars instead of 1 is that their cupcakes are pretty tasty.
