Editorial Review for Madeo – by Martha Burr
The Scene
The excellent Beverly Hills people-watching scene is straight out of "The Player." Hollywood heavy-hitters, who are coddled by the effusive owners, pack the place for both lunch and dinner. Attractive black-and-white photos of old Italy grace the walls. The vast booths are equally appropriate for romantic tete-a-tetes or top-secret business deals.
The Food
With a menu that can be extravagantly overpriced, this Northern Italian hangout offers an interesting, though sometimes pretentious, selection that alternates from mouthwatering to downright awful. The eggplant parmigiana floats, light and ethereal, melting in the mouth, while a tough baccala (dried salt cod) is overwhelmed by tomato sauce. Another culinary riddle: A pedestrian linguini strewn with Manila clams is fishy and bitter; but the veal roast, carved from a huge, gorgeous hunk of meat, is tender, heightened by a light but complex brown sauce.

It is one of the best Italian restaurants in town. Easily comparable to the Italian spots I love in NYC. Expensive, but you must go and get the Penne with meat sauce, unbelievable

I went to Madeo's recently for lunch. The service and food were very good overall. The only issues were the price, and the taste. The pasta dishes were good but could (or should) have been larger considering the price. And they were not all that flavorful. Maybe my expectations were too high but for that much money, and that small of a portion, I expected to be WOW'd. Unfortunately I found the dish a bit underwhelming and had to add salt (which I rarely if ever do). And I left the place feeling hungry and a bit ripped-off. I suppose if you are a celebrity and can afford any meal then this is a good place. Nice atmosphere, and nice Italian service. If however you don't have a recent movie deal you may want to try somewhere else where you will get a decent value.
Pros: Nice place, okay food
Cons: You pay for atmosphere, not the food
