Editorial Review for Japanache – by Harper Madden
The Scene
From the outside, it's just another high-end boutique in the tony Robertson shopping district. Inside, it's an authentic turn-of-the-century bathhouse with lockers and handsome benches, plus a stunning selection of pottery and baskets. The space is very Zen, with straw floors, creamy walls, a trail of small river stones across the floor and a view of a tranquil garden just beyond the showroom.
The Goods
Owner Suzanne Cavlovic specializes in late-19th and early-20th century tansu (cabinetry), which she imports from Japan. Many pieces are adorned with art work and personalized calligraphy which relate inspiring messages ("love," "longevity," "prosperity"). Other wonders include bronze hibachis (personal heaters), bamboo baskets used for ikebana (flower arranging) and folk art accessories. Iron coffee tables topped with 19th-century doors inspire awe with miniature moss gardens. The only modern pieces are tree slab stools (in black and natural), which mesh flawlessly with the antiques.
