Editorial Review for Esalen Institute – by Steven Jenkins
Overview
Founded in 1962 as an alternative educational center devoted to the exploration of what "Brave New World" author Aldous Huxley called the "human potential," Esalen has attracted free-thinking philosophers, creative artists, top-notch body workers and nervous wrecks in need of Gestalt therapy for the past 40 years. A full range of workshops are offered covering arts and creativity, body and movement, psychology and relationships, health and healing, social issues and more.
The Experience
Esalen is the kind of place East Coast snobs picture when they dismiss California as the land of fruits and nuts. That's far too stereotypical a description of this truly special sanctuary. Despite its '60s aura and the birthday-suit attire of many hot-tubbers, Esalen has changed with the times. East meets West here, as intellectual debate meets spiritual empowerment in a heavenly setting overlooking the ocean.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoYou don't have to be enrolled in a workshop to visit the Baths at Esalen. "Off-property guests" may book a massage and enjoy the soaking tubs 60 minutes prior to the service and 30 minutes after.
The ExtrasVisitors can arrange for an overnight stay or an extended retreat to attend various workshops, but reservations are always required. Workshop and lodging prices vary, so call the institute for details.
