There's a reason why their line is OUT THE DOOR and Penguin's next door is EMPTY
by adamgator
Heck, the line is aound the corner sometimes. But it moves FAST. Being a big Diddy Riese fan, I have a hard time with the "healthy" stuff. Well, not here. It's the closest thing to D-Lites Low Fat Softserve that I've found on the West Coast. Except the carbolite, awesome creamy testure - just like Dairy Queen. And it does not taste low cal! They have some "rotating" flavors and some constants. Low fat, non-fat, dairy free, and carbolite/low sugar/no sugar added. My wife has diabetes and this stuff is fine for glucose levels in moderation. Refreezes well - just let it thaw for 20 min. Parking is awful - lots of restrictions on Olympic and the lot is tight and packed. Send a passenger in and let the driver park (or sit in the tow-away zone). Or streetpark on westwood or the far side of Olympic. Eat it there (cool neon/retro decor) or take it home. The Peanut Butter is freakin' awesome. I'm also hooked on the Pumpkin. Some of the Chocolates are also excellent. This place will get you hooked. The Fro-Yo place in Malibu and Brentwood are marginal at best. Same with the new ones in Westwood. Penguins is nothing special. Don't get me started on pink berry - gag. This place rocks. The lines are long for a reason. It moves fast. Get a stamp card for buy 10 get 1 free; grab the Onion Newspaper at the door, and enjoy the wait as you contemplate your order. Bring a date (healthy choice) or the kids. If you want full fat, go to Diddy Riese in Westwood Village. If you want healthy but tasty, the Bigg Chill is your place!
- Pros: Best softserve in LA - great flavors, great texture, not bad for you
- Cons: Parking! Crowded, tight, small lot. I still go!
Times Up Chill
by tvfoodie24
I have been going to Chill for awhile for their dairy free ice cream. It's a treat since I can't have dairy and this was one of the few outlets that served decent dairy free. The only problem is that they always seem to have boring chocolate options...The sad thing is that it never tastes like anything they say it is. After numerous requests to use vanilla based dairy free mixtures, they still have the same pathetic chocolate. I believe that the people who run the place don't really care what their customers want and that is sad. But thankfully I found a new place for dairy free so my girlfriend and I never have to go to Chill again. Penguins has a far superior dairy free selection and when they have chocolate, it REALLY tastes like chocolate. Sorry Chill. Times up. You lose. Penguins wins my business now....And Penguins is cheaper. $4.50 for two cones, no toppings. Chill-$7.00.
